So, I have come to the conclusion that I am a prime shooter. Even the zooms that I have I use them at one focal length. So I am thinking of selling my zooms and buying the following:
14 f/2.8 L
35 L f/1.4 L
85 L f/1.2 II USM
I have also decided to upgrade my camera. Probably the 30D, althoug a 1 series looks awfully tempting to me.
Any way the question is has anyone used the 14? I have had a chance to use the 35 and the old 85 so I am pretty sure they are going to be in my kit. Not really looking for a cost analysis as I am fully aware of costs. Just impressions of the quality.
Then the painful part, selling what I have.
Thanks

I am in the same way re the primes.
I'd love a 14L for my camera -I have seen only one "not impressed" review. The other reviews say the minimal flare and quality/sharpness are why you pay double/treble the price of the Tammy or Sigma.

I am that place in my life where quality counts much more than price. I wish there was a camera store near here where I could try the 14.

Doc, please, tell me are kidding about letting go of your 24-70L. I was kinda wondering when you would upgrade to a larger, brighter pentaprism viewfinder from the penta-mirror design. I'm sure the 30D is a fine camera, but, as I have said before, "I would kill for a 1D2n".

Doc, I just want to wish you well in your pursuit of a better lens and camera combination. I also feel your pain as it relates to selling camera gear. I just sold a large portion (almost all) of my manual canon gear just to buy a Canon 10-22. I love what the 1.6 factor does to the telephoto ( I still have the EF 500 f4.5L and the 100-400 L), however the wide end of the spectrum leaves a lot to be desired. The reviews, that I have read, leads me to believe, that your Canon 10-22 maybe your best comprimise for the wide angle coverage. When you consider, flare, filter use, and ease of use, the EF 14mm f2.8 L doesn't look so great. I also doubt that the IQ is much different.

I have pretty well settled on the 85 and the 35, but just not sure about the 14. It does not fair very well in the reviews at fredmiranda. Was hoping someone had one and could provide more insight.

What happened with your 24-70 L ? So far you've been nothing but praising this lens.

A bit subjective but some 14mm tests http://www.16-9.net/lens_tests/14mm/14mm_test.html

I love my EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM. Would not trade her for any prime, let alone that
14L one.

I have also decided to upgrade my camera. Probably the 30D, althoug a 1 series looks awfully tempting to me.
As far as going more deep into the photography, with several objectives, I am also planning to update in the future with a new body. Currently I have the model 350D (I can say excepcional camera for the results/price), but you always are looking forward for something better conform you are going improven.
I donīt know if you can wait, but there are a lot of rumors about an EOS 35D, the real one that itīs going to update the 20D. I am not thinking about the 30D, because the improvement is no so significant, even for the 350D (my point of view). The question is that the 35D looks like a big contender against the 5D (price/performance), probably Canon already has it and they are trying to preserve the 5D market, but I think that Nikon is pushing hard with the 200 and for this time I have the feeling that Nikon is going ahead (Canon did it with the 300D, 350D and aven 20D before !!).
So I have time to wait until the end of this year to see how the things are developing ....
BTW. Series 1 is out of my pocket, too expensive for "hobbiest" use I do of the camera.

I like the way you are thinking Doc. I recently did the change to primes some time back and never regretted parting with my zooms when I saw the quality of the pictures from the primes.;)
I am still in thought about getting the 35mmL as I still have my one remaining 16-35mmL zoom. But I am for sure gonna buy the 85mmf/1.2L whether it will be the Mk1 or the latest Mk2 which has yet to be tested by the consumer..
Time will tell..:)
VERDICT: Do it Doc, Don't think too long just do it..
