I don't think I have a lens cleaning cloth large enough for the front element - I will pass on this opportunity.

I think you donīt have arms long enought to reach the front element,
at least this is the real reason why I didnīt buy this objective !! :D :D :D

At that weight, mate, it's not going anywhere - I could walk (or take a cab/taxi) to the front. Somehow, though, I don't think it will look that good on my silver 350D.
Do they have it in a different colour?

Does it come with the free tripod? For that price it had better! OH, and the hood and case too! :D
These are like the little green men - you may have heard they exist, but perhaps never really believed they exist, until they show up one day and abduct you. :D

I had the opportunity to shoot one of these at a Canon event (yup, got abducted). While attaching my 350D to it, I suddenly feel that the 350 has been reduced in status to something about as insignificant as a lens cap...

The prices for the 1200mm will continue to go up, it's a given. Lack of quantity demands higher price. simple economics.
And yes it works with the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters
And yes, it comes with it's own head and tripod

That boat example doesn't really look like it actually came from ANY L lens. However, at 1200mm, and looking across the water, atmospheric conditions most certainly would play a role.
I do have to add...it's a good thing SLRs aren't rangefinders! :)
Kennymc
11th of March 2006 (Sat), 15:45
For over nearly Ģ56.000 it should be sharper than that and there shouldn't be any vignetting either...

I agree. Something tells me that isn't really a shot from that lens...or it's a bad copy or something. That'd suck if that's the best you can get with it...and somehow I doubt SI and/or anyone else that owns one would accept that quality.

Uncropped, shot as RAW, run through Rawshooter Essentials. Atmospheric effects made the ship a little gray, but RSE 2005's highlight and shadow recovery worked well to give it back a little color.
My EXIF:
Camera Model Canon EOS 350D DIGITAL
Shooting Mode Program AE
Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/800
Av( Aperture Value ) 10.0
Metering Mode Evaluative Metering
Exposure Compensation 0
ISO Speed 400
Lens 1200.0 mm
Focal Length 1200.0 mm
Image Size 3456x2304
Image Quality RAW
Flash Off
White Balance Mode Auto
AF Mode Manual focusing
Color Space sRGB
Noise Reduction Off
Drive Mode Single-frame shooting
The tripod is exceptionally well engineered - it makes the lens feel almost weightless. I could aim it with two fingers, although they didn't really let me point it around, so I just put the camera on and shot at whatever was available. Of course, at that magnification, a little bit of finger movement goes a long way.
And yes.. why isn't there image stabilization on the darn thing? :D

No disrespect but I would rather have a bike/boat to get closer and a sharper lens for my Ģ56,000... ;)
If I needed that reach in a lens I think I would go for the 600 f/4 and a 2x converter @ 1/10th the price and forget the extra stop, maybe buy something decent with the other Ģ50,000... :D
Question:... Would you buy one?...

I believe it's 3.5 feet long, I forget the weight. The logisitics of just moving the thing could be challenging enough. I could try it out my newly purchased 2x extender though, I wonder what type of shots I would get with 2400mm!
If this is a serious sale I would think there would be a better photo of the lens on the site though. I wouldn't even bother buying anything with such a lousy jpg, let alone a lens worth about $125,000 CDN.
Am I seeing things, or did this guy actually mount a video camera on it?! http://www.pbase.com/image/51666046
I also wonder if this room is big enough to even achieve the minimum focus distance: http://www.pbase.com/image/53351614

I use a 1200mm on my old Brownie camera. The flash is a bit underpowered for a lens this long, but aside from that it's a great for shooting birds and basketball games.

Some comments:
First if I had the money and nothing significantly better to do with it, I would have it.
Must win lottery first though.
Second: it doesn't come with IS because Image Stabilization is for reducing hand shaking and unless you the Incredible Hulk or Terminator not going to be handholding this puppy.
The price seems a bit high unless Canon has stated they will not be producing any more. My understanding was a brand new order from Canon was between $72,000 and $90,000.
And with the EF adapter the XL series video camera can use any EF series lens. I have played with my 100-400 with 2x and 1.4x mounted on the front of my XL-2. I got better pictures out of my 10D (and even better from 1DsMkII), but having video that can see across a 4.5 mile wide river and make out people (although not identify them) is very cool.
And yes it is my understanding the 1200mm lens can take the 1.4 and 2x extenders as well as the extension tubes.
14m minimum focal distance is perfectly okay by me, shorter then that and I am not going to be able to see what I am looking at anyway. With at most a 2 degree arc of coverage (on the diagonal) there is not a whole lot of field of view to start with. At 14M you will probably just get a head shot at most.
Hmmm...maybe a good portrait lens, just need radio to converse with model. :)
Obviously the 1200mm is a special purpose lens with only two "real" purposes in life.
1. To attract other photographers, but not too close.
2. To complete your Canon lens collection.
As an added bonus it has potential for sports close-ups and rare wildlife shots.
