I arived just as they announced "Best of Show" & this was it. Jim bought this '65 Mustang in 1978 & took Sabrina to the prom in it in 1982!
The 302cid engine has aluminum heads, a tunnel-ram intake + an extra 250bhp boost from nitrous for a total of 650bhp. AOD (Auto Over Drive) trans & a 9" 4.10 rear end. It has a full air ride suspension & chrome moly roll cage.
Jim did the paint himself. He also did the '73 Mustang Mach1 I posted yesterday that won "Best of Paint" (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=146104).

Those are great Frank! The paint looks like a difficult color to shoot. I usually prefer period style mags, but those 3-pc. 10 spokers look pretty sweet keyed to mtch the body. Nice job in #3 showing the stance - this machine oozes, "I'm special!"

Got any bluer!

Nice paint and detail -very clean look in the engine bay but the interior is a letdown. Maybe he hasn't got there yet, maybe its on his "to do list". These jobs a re never finished.

Interesting to me are the big drilled racing disc rotors. Are they road legal in the US? They are not over here.

I've never thought to ask & I wonder why yours aren't legal. Maybe they won't last 50,000 miles under normal conditions? hey have you seen the how to on car lighting? Does it say somewhere not to take car pics in bright sunlight? http://photo.klein-jensen.dk/smilies/rotfl2.gif

I don't know why there are so many complaints. I like the car. Beautyful. It is the best both worlds. New and old. If your car isn't completly stock when starting out, there are many upgrades that will make it more reliable and fun to drive. I wouldn't mind trading in my 4 drum brakes to something that looked like those.
The important thing is that the guy who made it (or paid for it) loves everything about the car. And I bet he does.

Personally, I think the car is nice. It resembles the look of some of the older Lincolns that are being built today with big motors, low stance, and tuner style wheels. It just happens to be the first time it has been used on a Mustang. For me though, the stereo needs some work, especially for a "Best Of" car.

I hate it when overdone and tasteless cars like this take best of show. I think that chrome tends to blind some judges. Good pictures, though

I think that chrome tends to blind some judges. Just 'cause someone is a judge, doesn't mean that they aren't biased & don't have different priorities! I ask some of these guys what times it turns & get a blank look. I don't much care for the big speakers either & would rather hear the engine (that I put all that money into). ;)
But then, that's why we have stock "numbers matching" cars, trailer queens, rat rods, & everything in between. It would be pretty boring otherwise, wouldn't it?

Apparantley you have never judged a car show. It isn't about your personal taste, it is about quality of the car, from paint, interior, undercarraige, engine and so on. Judges MUST leave their personal tastes at home that day. From the photos taken the car looks immaculate and the details are what sets it off. That is why it wins Best of Show, not because the judges like the chrome.

I just noticed the motif extends to the wheel wells in the engine compartment too! I bet there are hidden flames that we can't see from the pics - maybe a little surpize for the undercarriage inspection.

In a perfect world, & maybe a national show, you'd be right. Some people said, "This show is put on by a local club & guess where the majority of the winners come from?" Their words, & I can't really confirm the truth in them. But I've had guys say that the judges walked right past their car without even glancing at it & the car he had looked pretty good to me, so draw your own conclusion. OTOH, this car did have a lot of painstaking work done & I think it deserves the win. It stood out from everything else.

As to "...you have never judged a car show", you'd be right. Make one friend at the same time I make 200 enemies? I don't think so. http://photo.klein-jensen.dk/smilies/rotfl2.gif

great shots of the car . I love the last two especially
the interior looks good for it's age , considering Sabrina was brought to the prom in there way back in 1982, and he already had had the car for four years before that

I wish I'd had the good sense to keep one of my cars from back then. I did have a '65 Spitfire in the garage for 30 years, but it was only meant to be a parts car when I was racing & just wouldn't have been the same as having a 'Cuda in there. :D

And that car was destroyed by someone who thought it was built in 2006 not 1966. There is something to be said about keeping classics classic and not by messing them up with showy garbage. I've been to events where there have been pristinely restored classics, where so much care and passion went into making them what they are. Then some show off with deep pockets shows up in a new M3 with scissor doors and a nifty paint job, and everyone forgets about the passion, the thing that makes car enthusiests enthusiests, for the guy with the flashier car.

and it is wrong. that is my opinion.

Let's not turn this into a debate about what show categories and aspects of the car hobby are more important to ourselves. You can probably find a car geek forum by doing a search on google. Last I checked, this is a photography forum.

I'd agree that, "...so much care and passion went into making them what they are." My personal peeve is "Trailer Queens" that haven't so much as a scuff mark on the chromed brake rotors 'cause they've never been on a road. But as I've said before, "Whatever you do, someone will love it, someone will hate it, & the rest might not even notice!"

I'm off for a long weekend. You guys play nice! :D

So to put this in photography terms for the sake of this forum:

Unless someone is shooting the type of picture you like, it is wrong. In essence that is what you are saying. You are telling people that their artistic approach to building THEIR car should only reflect restoring it to its original condition. If this were the case we would have no diversity in the automobile industry. Everyone would drive the same color car, with the same interior. What fun is that? Look, I get that you like the restored classics, as do I, but don't you think that "so much care and passion" went into building this car, as well as the M3 to which you refer?

Again, different approaches to both car building and photography are not bad things.

I'm saying I don't agree with the judgesI see where your coming from. Faced with an all original vintage Corvette and a car like this, many (judges included) may not be able to understand that paint drips in door jams, and a little orange peel on the on the recesses of fender lines are just as difficult achieve as some of the wild paint treatment a custom gets. And an unqualified judge may not be able to even compare these qualities with another more modern restoration. And that's just the paint. Finding even repro original parts for a 40 year old car is just as difficult as engineering a modern disk brake setup.

Popularity of the types of classic cars we all enjoy ebbs and flows. A lot of times budget and condition of the car can be the decision maker in the direction of resto. My brother in law had an all original '67 Riviera GS. It was in such good condition that he decided it made sense to go for an original type of resto. His next car was a '67 GTO with BOP 400 w/ single carb. Someone had literally swapped the 4 speed trans for an automatic and hacked the clutch pedal off! This car is now a butt-ugly lime green with disc brakes, coil-over suspension, and a crazy car stereo system. I like both cars, and I think he liked the Rivi better (he didn't keep it), but likes the freedom of being able to whatever he wants to the GTO. Someday I'll get around to taking some pictures of it.

Looks like someone has a very expensive hobby. I like to see cars restored to their original showroom look but that engine is a nice piece of engineering. The steering wheel is a bit flashy and I sure as hell wouldn't like to clean all that chrome :)

zapman
25th of March 2006 (Sat), 20:06
cool car. but I would have left the rims all chrome or some type of Ford rim on there maybe FR500 rims.

oh and drilled rotors aren't recomended for track and drag strip *atleast most arent* usually just for show becuase the tend to crack at the holes especialy if they're used in the rain. most companies have a warning stating that they're not ment for it.

the back of the hilbourne looks blown out, In #2? That's because (1) I do let some chrome blow out (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=89123) if I think it's relatively unimportant to the more interesting parts of the image, & (2) If the shot had been for a client, I would have used a tripod to get two different exposures to blend together. While I always have it in my trunk, I don't carry it around $10,000+ paint jobs. And (3) if someone wants to print free web images, they're going to have to fix them themselves if they want to use mine? ;) and whats with the clearer much greener grass in the frame? The border looks better than the subject of the photo. Experimental framing instead of cropping. I've tried it with shots with other cars in the frame that I didn't want to be more prominent than the subject, but were interesting enough that I didn't want to crop them out. Love it, or hate it, it's your choice.

Thanks for taking the time to comment on a 3 year old thread!
