OK,

All these were shot in RAW, some at ISO 3200 and some at ISO1600. I am starting to understand you can not get "portrait" sharpness in these horrible light conditions. So I kinda like these.

I am working a deal to be the "house" photographer for this bar and grill. I had two goals in mind this week when I went to see them. One was to get the artist I manage booked on a regular schedule and the other was to see if I could work a deal to be the house photog.

I stopped by Tuesday but they had a fire that destroyed one of the kitchens, with a bunch of work they re-opened last night. I spoke to the band and told them I'd comp a shoot so I could add them to my portfolio and start to get a better feel for the place.

The lights are really bad, the lead guitarist on the left side of the stage had a bright red light on him all night, and the right side of the stage where the bass player hung out had a green light. The lead singer got a mix of the two. The drummer had some strange yellowish light they brought with them.

The stage is pretty small but the band was real cool. In some of the shots I was up on stage somewhat hidden (out of the way) on the left side. This is where I got the best shots of the drummer.

Let me know what you guys think!

#1 I did not do a good job of getting full band shots from the back, I'll have to work on that.

#3 This pic had real harsh red to it. It did not help that he wore a bright red shirt. I played with some settings in PS2.0 and I really like the way this one came out.

#6 Lead Singer and Guitarist - I could have framed this one a little better

#7 This is my favorite (only because I like lots of curves!)

1st isn't that bad, it's a bit dark, but conveys the atmosphere.
#2 ad 4 are nice. Last might've been nice if not for the 'flashy' look...

The light was so bad there was no way to get it with out the flash, I had it in AV mode with fill flash, synced @ 250.

Dude, shots 2 through 4 are sweet!

Drummers are always difficult to shoot, simply because they're usually lit poorly (hey, after all, they're drummers). The B&W one works real well for me. I think I'd like #4 a bit more had you gotten the body of the bass completely in the shot.

As for the last shot, well, I'm always able to accept the judicious use of flash from time to time.

Nice work, man, really.

What lens were you shooting with?

Steve,

I'll have to go back and look at the data. I was using the 85 f/1.8, the 24-70 and the70-200.

I am thinking the best shots came from the 85mm.

With respect to the bass, I felt if I got the whole thing it would leave to much void next to the left side of the bass players head. I liked the crop with the amount of room in it now. I also wanted more focus on the musician and less on the guitar. In the B&W I wanted more attention to the guitar.

I appreciate the kind words.

Here is another one of the drummer, not sure I like the cropping but I like the look through the toms.

I also added some data below the above pics, I'd love some comments.

I think one of my mistakes was having the WB set wrong? Maybe the parameters as well?

Here is another of the bass player.

Two and three are really good. The one with the green face would have been a winner without that ugly gel ... I cannot figure what goes on inside the heads of the LDs sometimes! The one with weird border of the drummer is interesting, too.

Shot number 2 and 4 is excellent - always nice to get the drummers - and this is a very good sample.

Thanks for sharing
