Sounds like you received a bad copy. Did you get it checked for the vertical orientation issue? That could be causing the dullness as some people reported the vertical issue crept into the horizontal issue.

but it has been fixed for the vertical orientation problem.

i haven't seen a lot of sports pictures with this lens, so what do you think about shooting sports? is the focus too slow?

the reason i ask is because this would be my ideal lens and great price range, however i have heard that it focuses kind of slow sometimes.

I've nearly pulled the trigger on getting this lens probably 10 times. It's in my "cart" on several websites. A good friend of mine has one and he let me shoot with it on my 350D for an afternoon. Sure, it ain't L quality, but unless you are seriously pixel-peeping, I think 90% or more of the regular folks out there would never know the difference.

I know I'll get one at some point, probably soon. What a great travel lens it would make if one could only take one body and two lenses? Moreover, as a lightweight, walking-around lens, I think it would be hard to beat if one wanted IS.

Heck, I may just go order the darn thing right now... uh.., maybe later... :D

I found this lens doesnt perform as good on the 350D, I found the focus even on bright days at 300mm was never really spot on, where as on the 5D its so much better, the body used makes a big difference, on the 350D I would say its no better than a consumer lens, on the 5D I would say its L quality!

Just tried the 70-300 f/4-5.6 out today on my EOS400D. Very cloudy dull day, but lens performed really nicely. It's a bit clunky but I was really surprised and it stops down to f/32 on the 400D. If you are getting soft images, consider your shutter speed. Auto focus is very good but manual is nice if you get the hang of it going in reverse to other lenses! Excellent value though for the money, and produces sharp images the further you stop it down. There is also very little chromatic abberation at 300mm, hardly noticeable on mine. I just wonder about the DO version, is it worth double the price?

Some say it isnt worth the extra, although it is much smaller which would be nice.

pat - I was traveling on a Macau-to-HK jetfoil, and the one in the picture is going at the opposite direction towards Macau. So, about 100MPH speed differential between us, and through the windows.

I work at Boeing and it's been a long time since we built hydrofoils like these. Interestingly, I was just talking about it with someone the other day. I didn't realize any were still in service.

So you spent a day in Macau, when? I was born there but I immigrated to Australia over 19 years ago. Not the Macau I use to know though...:(

Looks like a typical foggy, misty day in that area..not brilliant for phtography I suppose :)

sparksdjs - Turbojet (used to be Far East Hydrofoil) is the largest operator of the Boeing 929s. Right now they operate 14 of them, plus a Chinese PS-30 built under license from Boeing. Japan and South Korea also have some Jetfoils (including the other PS-30), including a route between the two countries.

Souwalker - I grew up in Hong Kong, and still visit often. I like to spend a night over in Macau everytime and visit some of the restored historical sites and churches. I don't gamble.

Here are some pictures of Macau I took in recent years:

12/04, using a compact Nikon 3700 (neat little 3.1MP camera, but lots of barrel distortion at the wide end):

Nice shots of Macau. Did you use tripod? Are they real blue skies? the last time I was back in macau over 4 yesrs ago, I hardly saw any blue skies and most of the time it's grey. Coming from Australia where the blue sky is stunning, it's depressing....

I am acutually going to Macau for xmas this year for 2 weeks. I am going back kicking and screaming as not too happy to. Wife says either go or divorce so I am under duress :D

Anyway, i hope to to get some nice historical picture while i am there.

My wife has a 70-300mm and thinks its great. She has taken some cracking photos with it. However she has a new 70-200 f/4 IS in the post.

There is another thread on this site that has asked people to post their best shots with their worst lens and lots have posted amazing shots with what is slated as poor glass. I once got very disheartened when I compared a 17-55 16-35L 17-85 and a cheap olympus compact with the same frame in my garden on a nice day and asked my daughter if she could tell the difference, when she was adement that there was no difference I was in a bad mood wondering why on earth id spent so much money when the compact did fine.

I have cheered up a lot since then knowing that its not all about IQ with good light. Its about how a lens and camera perform together in all sorts of variations. The bottom line is that you get what you pay for, know what you want from a lens and how much you can justify the cost to yourself.

My wife and I spent a day a few weeks ago shooting fast jets at a busy air base on a fairly dull day. She was not so happy to see how many keepers I had produced with my 70-200 f/2.8 compared to her 70-300. However there has been many a nice well lit day we have been out together and to be honest there is very little difference between the two lenses. For me the extra cost and weight of the 2.8 was worth it but to many including my wife is not. She has bought the 70-200 f/4 IS not because she is not happy with the image quality of the 70-300 but it is slightly faster and focuses better along with better build quality. She wouldnt entertain the 2.8 as it is too heavy for her.

I agree the weakest spot of this lens are the AF (and built quality). It's not fast enought. But for slow action or static subject, i'm amaze of the picture quality even at f5.6. I buy this lens to complement my 400mm f5.6 as a walk around wildlife lens, and don't regret it.

It just means the picture was blown up to 100% view (actual pixel size) and then cropped.

Thanks - Yes I use lightroom to process my raw files. I have a preset that I use for outdoor images from my 70-300. I'm at work now so I dont know the exact settings of the preset but it definitely adds some saturation, contrast and sharpening. I like bright saturated colors, sometimes a little too much.:D

This was done with the aid of a 1.4x extender and some cropping, manually focused because in AF it would only produce blurry pics. Still not real sharp (to my eyes), I may try again this evening w/out the TC if it's clear out.

Yea, im deciding between these two lenses also. I'm mostly concerned about IQ, and it seems from what i've read that the two are very similar. That is a big plus, as even thought the 70-300 doesnt have incredible BQ, its got more range, and good IS. Arrgh, this desicion is killing me. I literally go back and forth everyday! Today i feel like the 70-300, yesterday i felt sure about the 70-200. Uggg.

fz_za
24th of March 2008 (Mon), 13:32
Canon Soldier, if it is any help, my decision to go with a 70-200 was not because of build quality or price - it was speed (maximum aperture value). Depending on what you shoot, f/5.6 is quite dark and IS only helps so much (naturally, you could bump up ISO, but at the expense of noisier images.)

egordon99
24th of March 2008 (Mon), 13:35
Also, the 70-200mm f/4 IS (probably the non-IS as well) autofocuses VERY FAST. Front element doesn't rotate, lens doesn't extend while zooming, you have FTM, ring-USM, excellent build quality, blah blah blah.
Go for the L!

run53
24th of March 2008 (Mon), 16:56
I am also torn on this decsion. I will be shooting outdoor track. Leaning towards the 70-200 f/4L as i think that would be better for faster moving objects. But I was wondering of anyone has had success with outdoor sports like track and field with the 70-300IS?

Canon Soldier

Yea, but i have a few issues. First:
The image quality is supposedly not THAT big of a difference.
I don't get why FTM is so important
at 200mm on the 70-300, the aperture is only 2/3 slower
Ring USM isnt THAT much faster than micro USM
Build quality is a plus i guess
I just keep getting lured back by the nice dampened focus ring, just the cool feel of the 70-200, and the great IQ i keep seeing from it. Its just such a hard desicion... i got till april 25, as that is my birthday and when i can afford it...

Thanks for the comments!

I forgot to mention that when I first tried the lens my first impression was - this isn't that long! If you're trying to take a picture of a tree or landscape, it seems really long, but if you're looking at a bird - wow, you still need to be pretty damn close!

I love the reach for flowers and bugs. Birds are really advanced level photography, but I'm starting to feel the addiction taking hold, lol!

It was a borrowed copy as I am still in the market for a zoom to augment my 17-55 IS. Very sharp, even at 300mm. Haven't made up my mind yet... want to try the 70-200 f/4 IS.

LOL! Great capture! You can just see the fear and excitement on those people's faces!

If you're in a budget, this lens compliments your 17-55mm IS as it does mine -as long you also don't mind the 56-69mm gap. However, if you have $$$ to burn, I would most definitely look into those L zooms!

Wow, I love that dolphin shot with the cool perspective. The lead dolphin looks like it made it through a grinder got stuck somewhere and was rescued. Awsome shots! I love this lens.

I only had the lens for a couple of days so I really couldn't put it to the test as much as I would've liked but I was impressed with what I got.

Here is an example of the sharpness at 300mm (f/5.6, 1/1250 sec, ISO 200)

going from a 70-300 IS to a 70-200 F4, i definately miss the IS and extra 100mm reach, but i definately am loving the pictures i am getting out of it.

Don't get me wrong thou, i loved the pictures from the 70-300 IS, just something about the pictures from the 70-200 f4L i like more.

Considering that 90% of my shots are at 300mm I think that I owuld miss the extra reach if I were stuck at 200mm. The 70-200 is a great lens but I would rather have the IS version if I were going to make that purchase.

So I just "upgraded" from a 70-200 f/4 "L" lens and think I'm a lot happier with this lens. Yeah I know the upgraded comment is odd but I like this lens more than the 70-200. The IS is pretty nice.

When I use this lens I’m always surprised how sharp it is wide open at 300mm. Here’s one from the Detroit Tigers game last week. It's about 40 or 50% cropped.

300 mm, f/5.6, 1/800, ISO 800

Here's another shot from the tigers game. If interested, I have a set of pics up from the game -->HERE<-- (http://www.flickr.com/photos/12299238@N00/sets/72157604966306884/), all taken with the 70-300 IS.

Here's another example of this lens. Just a backyard flower shot while the trees were blossoming.

Hi! I'm deciding between this lens and the 70-200 f4 L.

How about the focus speed? I have a 75-300 IS USM and it's awfully slow and always takes two or three time to make focus. And the IS? Is it quiet? In my 75-300 it's noisy move the whole lens until it's stabilized.

I have the 17-85 IS USM and I love that lens. Quiet, fast focus, fron element does't rotate. Is the 70-300 similar to this lens?

I wait for your comments.

Thanks a lot!

Focus speed on this lens is a bit slow (IMHO), and hunts in low light; IS is not as quiet as the newer IS lens (e.g. 18-55mm IS); front element does rotate; despite all this, it's a sharp lens for the money.

Good luck! ;)

superbet, the focusing on the 70-200 is lighting fast. That is one of the reasons i went with it vs. the 70-300. I just figured that way better build, FTM, Non extending/rotating barrel, and incredible AF speed outweighed the extra 100mm. 200mm vs 300mm isn't really that big of a difference. Also, IS wouldn't be used very often, only at zoos, because IS becomes all but obsolete for sports. The best thing about it is that you get giddy when you use it, and it inspires loads of confidence, at least for me. Too bad i had to return it :(

I am a SUPER Newbie when it comes to photography. This is one of my favorite pictures taken with my 70-300mm

I primarily photograph wildlife, and as with everybody else, I feel like I need more reach. Do you guys think it would be worth while to upgrade to the 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L?

I think that is a great shot, Tcon. I personally would not have shot it portrait and maybe gotten the legs/feet in the frame as well, but otherwise I like it!

Thanks! When he was walking to me it didn't frame very well in my eyes. I think there was too much household clutter. I think its pretty cool to see the power of the shake because of the height of the droplets. This is another shot with the 70-300mm at a fair distance away after he got out of a dugout.
