Impressed with those results from a Kenko converter: the Canon one is WAY more £££"S of course.

Quite tempted..I do like this 70-300.

My first picture with my new lens 70-300mm IS USM.
260mm, 1/100, 5.6,ISO 6400, did a little facelift with DPP to compensate the noise. Suggestions are welcomed. Thx.

Hi, this was with your L lens or the regular EF 70-300mm.

I put this glass to more rigorous tests recently. The autofocus struggled quite a bit to lock onto distant subjects. As I got close; it did its job nicely and produced sharp images in good light. Bottomline is - it's a good prosumer telephoto zoom lens.

1/200 sec @ f/8, ISO 800, f/l 300mm

All post-processed in Lightroom 2 with enough added contrast, saturation, clarity and fill light to make them look the way the subjects did in real life, as opposed to "photoreal", although I did also touch up teeth and eyes where I thought it made for a more flattering picture.

I think that number 3 shows this lens at its best: at f/8 and sufficiently less than the fully-extended 300mm. Having said that, number 4 is also pretty good at 300mm. Just got one of these today.. what a treat! So much beefier than the 55-250 and very sharp. Gonna love this one too! Here is a quick early shot with a Kenko 2X @ 300mm. I had to manual focus and it is handheld. Underexposed it and had to bring it out but looks pretty decent IMHO for early test from an amature. This park is about 200 feet behind my house and you can hardly tell it is there normally.

Hi DrFingers... not to answer for MasterTech01 but I know this one :)

The "Magic Drain Pipe" is the nickname for the Canon 80-200L f/2.8 glass that was around in the late 1980's.

Nikon has recently released a 55-300mm version of consumer telezoom at affordable price. I wish Canon did it first. 55 gives a wonderful focal length for good portrait photography. So, at f/4 or little stopped down point, it sure will produce great images. This makes it both a portrait lens and telephoto lens. 70mm on the other hand is little off limit for good portraits.

BTW, both Canon and Nikon had to halt production at their northern plants due to recent catastrophes sweeping Japan. We all express our heartfelt condolences for them and let's make a vow to do anything possible on our part to mitigate the sufferings of those affected people.

God help them.

There is always the 22-250 IS and sigma 50-150 I dare say those would make fairly good portrait lens's and the Canon is pretty damn affordable.

Plus 70mm isnt too long for portrait, my best have been taken using a 90mm prime on a cropped body so 70 is fairly good so long as you have the room to get back enough.

mastertech01
29th of March 2011 (Tue), 20:19
Im trying not to trust all my photo needs to just one lens. That would make me feel too much like I am using a high dollar point and shoot. I use the 70-300 IS for my visits to scenic areas, and my 17-85 IS for around the house and general purpose. I hope to add a UWA for special purpose eventually, but these two lenses along with a Kenko 2X and some tubes for closeup photography should do me just fine.

I would be just afraid that the longer the range the more is given up on IQ across the range. Im very happy with the IQ and performance these two lenses offer at a price that I can feel comfortable with having laying about doing nothing when I feel like doing nothing. Unlike my L lenses and the 1D MK III that were a large investment that gave little dividends in return for a hobbyist.

I've tried extension tubes before with some success, but nowhere near as sharp, or the great colours.

A close-up (+8) is what did most of the magnification

The fly had a 36mm tube and the diopter, the tube was just there for testing and I could get the same magnification without the tube, just zooming a bit further. This is that same fly around the full range, maybe around 260mm

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5099/5568636339_29b0c947e6_z.jpg

And the spider had a 1.4TC plus the diopter, the TC was there just for the lazyness of taking it out between the bird shots

If you had lack of sharpness using tubes, try opening the aperture a bit.
Using a reverse lens I found that despite the lack of glass, its not true that tubes wont affect IQ, when they increase the distance to the apertude blades they do add diffraction as well, so I try not to go over F16 when using them

In fact, in one sense getting the high end bodies and lenses make little difference. As learned from pros; with all those arsenal you have to set up blinds or camouflage tents, wait there for hours patiently and if lucky enough, birds will come close unsuspicious of the tent and then the shooter captures some good shots. Well if that's the scenario, what's wrong with consumer bodies and lenses?

You can capture same quality images from inside that tent can't you? The above examples are ample evidence in support of this reality. In the wild same quality shots are obtainable with consumer setup provided you can shoot from your under cover platform. So, are those pricey equipment really necessary?

Canon TC wont work, they dont physically match on non-L lenses
other brands will, mine is a kenko, mostly all my bird shots are done with it
Tubes of any brand, including canon will work

Depends, I have a lot of blurred shots due the lack of speed, if I had a camera with higher ISO than 1600, or a faster lens so to speak, keeper rate would be higher.

Canon TC wont work, they dont physically match on non-L lenses
other brands will, mine is a kenko, mostly all my bird shots are done with it
Tubes of any brand, including canon will work

Thanks for the input and the image is great. Yes I agree. I also possess a 450D body that I love and won't part with it until it reaches the end of its lifespan. However, I get some difficult shots more conveniently with my 50D although I don't like its 15 mp sensor (crop sensors are best served with 12 mp resolution).

Recently I learned about a Tamron 200-500mm f/5-6.3 telezoom lens that retails at around US$ 900/- (now dealers claim 50 bucks more for Japanese disaster). If I knew about it little earlier; may be I would have gone for it. 500mm is very good for birding and wildlife really although u will get roughly 485mm at the tele end. That's one of the drawbacks of 3rd party lenses. :(

I can finally contribute to this tread. These are a few from a family of foxes that lived by my house. All shoot at 300mm, hand-held, slightly cropped and PP for WB & saturation .

You have to spot meter the moon. Otherwise it'll just blow it out. Then you can pull out highlights and shadows that you want in Lightroom or something similar:

I believe the DGX model will show you the true focal length in the exif file. If you shoot 300mm on your lens then the exif file will show you 420mm, not 300mm.

I have the DG model and sure wish it showed the true focal length.

Thanks. I didn't really do much processing, although I did adjust the sharpness in DPP to 7-10 somewhere (can't remember exactly what value). I don't use Photoshop or anything like that, because I find I can get adequate quality using DPP only and just messing with the RAW tab a little.

I shot these at 300mm f/6.3 to sneak a little extra sharpness compared to 5.6. I worried that adjusting the sharpness would make these pictures less helpful for evaluating the unbiased quality of the lens, but I figured they would be useful for demonstrating what it can do with a little sharpening in DPP.

So many great mind-blowing images; really lovely and excellent treat for the eyes. I wish I could post some of mine but, have to wait for my gun to arrive and then . . . . . . .

I don't really understand why some people compare this lens against 70-200mm f/4L ! There is a big 100mm difference. The latter can be a good portrait lens or sometimes indoor sports photography lens from close distance. On the other hand 70-300 is a genuine telephoto zoom lens. It is frequently used for wildlife photography and birding.

Granted L quality matters. Then again why bring up that issue despite knowing this is a non-L lens?

You know, a Cadillac is not a Corvette either, but I think it was the Cadillac CTS V that had the Corvette engine, in which case the comparison could begin a little bit.

The 70-300mm includes some of the same UD glass in it, typically reserved for just L lenses.

I can't see the problem with yours at web size, post a crop, but in advance since yours is indoors, check if your shutter speed isn't too slow.
The first one I posted, the blue manakin is actually a bit blurred due its movement, but the three were shot wide open with a 1.4 teleconverter and manual focus

Bought it for walking around on casual shooting days, but if I can find the recipe for consistent bokeh, I could use it for street portraiture. -- I'm going to baby my 85L and it stays indoors. :-(

You mean DOF, not bokeh, but it wasn't added either, I think the TC might have helped on that, also I was ground level at the finch, that does the trick.

I currently have this lens, but can't seem to get the sharpness others have provided in their pics. I'm so flustered by it that I have been thinking to getting the 70-200 f/4 L (non IS)as a replacement just because of the lack of clarity. I've been using it mostly for birds, wildlife and moon pictures with IS set on #2.

Anyone have both lenses and can make a recommendation.

Put IS on 1 unless you're panning, 2 stabilizes only vertical motion

Doing a little cross posting here with the Birds group. This thread hasn't been posted to in a bit:

First outing with this lens. Looks good to me :) I think I'm officially past the point of being able to blame any problems with my photos on my gear.

Total amateur here...

I treated myself to a 7D and a EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM as a Christmas present to myself. Went for a walk this afternoon and got these. It was a pretty overcast day here, so the ISO is a bit high. All photos were handheld.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with them as a first outing.

There's currently a sale on the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM if you buy a 7D. For $299, I couldn't pass it up. After today, I'm happy I didn't.

Hi Everyone,

I just moved up into the DSLR world of photography. I've gotten a Rebel T3i and the EF 70-300 IS USM. Been trying to learn how to use it. I feel this is one of the better shots I've gotten. Taken on a cloudy day, i used a flashlight to help illuminate the gorget of the bird. This particular hummer just has an outstanding appearance the way the reds, greens, gold and bronze comes out on him.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7018/6597833225_b9d99496ca_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/j_ice_photos/6597833225/)
Morning Hummer 2 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/j_ice_photos/6597833225/) by J Ice Photos (http://www.flickr.com/people/j_ice_photos/), on Flickr

The background on this picture is not clouds and sky, rather stone wall on bottom, Blue trim of neighbors shed, and side of other neighbors house. A similar picture to this one is the first one I've printed from the camera. At 16x20 its bigger than a chicken and the detail is great.

Thank you. I continue to be impressed by this lens and think that it's a nice compliment to the 17-55 IS. So far, I'm really happy with what I've been seeing out of both on my new 7D.

I have, for some time now, considered this lense. I have waded through most of what is here and am wondering about the "MACRO" side of this lense - good or bad? And, lastly, will this lense work on a 5D III or the present 5DII?

I haven't every used this lens for Macro work but it is an EF lens and does work on all modern Canon bodies. Here are some of mine with a 5D2 from earlier in this thread...

You just can't use EF-S lenses on the full-frame bodies.
