just curious as to everyones experience with spot meters. Should i purchase an external one, or just spot meter with my 10D. i have a handheld meter which takes reflective and incident readings, but no spot meter. just curious..?

Using the 10D with partial metering can give a "pseudo spot meter", but it will take reading off a much larger subject area than a spot meter, which typically has a 1 deg target area.
The theory with spot meters is that you can take more precise readings, especially of highlights to control exposure much more carefully.
There is a good article in the links listed here:

The theory has convinced, me to invest in a Minolta Spotmeter F, but I haven't owned long enough to testify that the theory is correct. :)

For a poor man's spot meter do the following: Use a zoom lens and take a reading with the lens zoomed so that the spot you want to meter fills the viewfinder or most of it. Take a reading and set it manually, or use exposure lock and zoom out to recompose your picture.
