Pet-Kal, sounds like you'll be needing the 300 & 400 f/2.8 lenses pretty soon, huh? Congrats on the 16-35 and post some beautifcul twig-pics :D

That's the first order of the day.......two wide angle lenses: head to head. The only way to heal my tormented soul.
Some real life tests:
(1) "Iguana" test: focus and bokeh
(2) "Plazza billboard" test: colour rendering
(3) "Conifer" test: resolving power

I have no doubt that there are superb 16-35 copies out there. I also suspect there could be some substandard ones. For once I hope I get lucky and get one of the former.
Listen Eos, have mercy this time around, gods know that I had suffered enough because of the 24-70 and the 135 until I found the "pure" ones.;)

Thanx Danny, never mind that, pretty soon I'll be needing a caddy not only to carry my camera/lens around but also he/she could be snapping pictures for me. Come to think of it, such images would certainly look better than my very own pathetic photos.:D

Have plenty of trouble already hauling the 100-400 around.

Do not know if it is going to be soon enough for you Elton.;)
However, in the interim you can use professional reviews like that one by Michael Reichmann. However, they all say about the same thing in the end: unless you need f/2.8 get the 17-40. The 16-35 costs more than twice as much. There you go.....

You'll love the lens, bro. I love mine. It's a little more prone to flare, but that's about the only gripe I have with it besides the price. ;) BTW, optically, I saw no difference in IQ between this and my previous 17-40L. I would've kept the 17-40L, but I really wanted that f/2.8, and so far it's paid off in dividends. Wouldn't trade it for the world. Must've got lucky and scored one of those rare sharp copies of this lens. Only kidding of course. I suspect that there are way more good copies of this lens out there than bad. The internet does have a way of demonizing certain products. ;)

I hear ya Lordy. Flare does not concern me a lot....I guess I always try to shoot conservatively vis-a-vis sources of strong light. Very seldom I even have hoods on my lenses.....only when I anticipate flare issues. (However, all of my lenses have B&W UV filters screwed on them permanently.;) )

Incidentally, I left you a message in the 5D vs. MkII(N) thread.:D

No way Roli, can not afford it any more, do not need it, do not want it. Besides, my days of driving a Vette, trotting in Gucci shoes, Rollex watch on my wrist, white belt holding my Armani pants up, are long gone. In fact, come to think of it, I never had nor liked any of that s..t.

It's probably goin to be an EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS USM....will just to have to convince Dante it's an L-equivalent lens.

If it were to compare the various lenses it would be useful. Perhaps there should be a separate 'Braggers Forum'

Congrats Petey boy. Please keep us all abreast regarding brown vans and so on. I see you sneaked in the 100-400 IS L, or did I miss that Yipeeee post.

In theory the 16-35 should prove ideal for Urban shooting and BB, TLee, Twitch, et al look forward to your return to us. We have all missed you (or perhaps it was your bullet proof vest!) Anyway, Ducks are for the birds and be nice to see you in downtown Toronto area soon ... catch a cab ;-) Just watch out for that Doc Frankenstien with his slacks and pointy shoes.

Dave, as air temperature starts rise, the lake is becoming very crowded very fast....I suspect I will be switching back to urban photography presently.

Here, I'd like to regale you and Busterboy with a tight non PP'd hand-held duck shot at 400 mm, no IS, as a way of saying "thank you".

The truth , at least my take on it, of the 16-35 shall surface soon ;) The staff in my camera store probably bite their nails already in anticipation of that notorious copy testing program. They seem really worried about all the free time I have on my hands.;) They also suffered thru the 24-70 test program almost as much as I have, so I understand.

I understand....this has been a very protracted dilemma for me....nothing I have read has really helped me chose....just a few little red lights here and there about the 16-35. The only way I can get to the bottom of it is via the "suck and see" method. If the 16-35's IQ is inferior to my 17-40's IQ in any important way, back she goes... one f-stop difference or not, however difficult that raturn might turn out to be.

That seat practice shows you are moving in the right direction although ostensibly still an amateur. A real pro like myself never raises the seat to start with. Condyk lad, you seem to require an inordinary amount of coaching on the issue of ladies' tastes. Since I am not a Californian nor an alumnus of the English public school (read "private" in Canada) "system", it is not my "ar*e" which makes the key happy difference in those matters.

I guess Lordy knows that already ;) , I have some reservations about the MkII(N) as a generic photography camera. The more I use it the more I am convinced it is a "speed specialist" of a body. Unless one needs/wants that speed, I think one might be better served by the 5D. (BTW the 5D is on my "next" gear list.)

When it comes to the 16-35, i'll report it the way I see it. We have gone thru some superb non L lenses and some crappy L lenses before....so I am ready for and open to anything.:D

Not for long... I've had the d200 for about a week. Not impressed. I had a d1, d1x & d100 and thought i'd give it a try with all of the N*KON gear I still have.

But clearly, the CANON gear I have (just sold my 20d) is my future. The 5d is a fantastic piece of technology... I can't imaging what the MKIIn will be like. Then,,, I'm done for awhile....

Dave: Many men go for the length. I hear that might be a sign of some sort of insecurity. I go for the diameter/width....lookey at my modest lens collection....400mm is the longest whereas I've gottten quite an assortment of the stubby ones.

Lordy, without going into specifics, to qualify for "hoser" distinction you have to (over)dress genuinely funny and warm. Having your mother buy you clothes and then dress you just does not cut it in Canada. Perhaps it does in California ? Or on US Navy submarines ?

However, I could not help noticing that Belmondo has both lenses listed in his inventory. He may wish to give us his take on the comparison of 16-35 vs. 17-40 ? Maybe there is something already to that effect available in the archives. ?

(1) When you see a lens of mine (or lenses) advertised on the Marketplace Forum, that would mean that either you'll be dealing with my widow, or I am trying to dump a "disappointment" lens that I could not, for whatever reason, return to my camera store.
