Thanks, this was my first time out. I was using a 20D with a Canon 70-300 IS, aperture priority.
Here's another one that I think came out pretty good.

Not bad stuff. Panning is hard until you get the hang of it. You look like you're on your way quite well!

Cool. I see you like to shoot from the outside. Path Valley has a stupid fence up at the only good turn so I couldn't shoot there unless I stood behind them, defeating the whole purpose, and getting rained on with the flying crap. I shot mostly from the inside because I preferred to go easy on my equipment. :) Sometimes I'd hit the outside of turn 3 but it wasn't as exciting since turns 2 and 3 were pretty tame and turn 1 was just too far off. Turn 4, the good turn, would just give me shots from the rear. Got a few of those but they were generally undesired by the drivers and families who were my financial backing via print sales.

Great shots where were you standing? I was there i was standing at turn 2 first time in a long time since i was there.do you shoot night races and was wondering what flash would work.

I shot night races at Path Valley, Darren. Not really by choice. The idiots who own the track thought starting at 6PM was a peachy idea.
I used a Sigma EF-500 DG Super and it worked fine. Recycle times weren't the greatest but you usually have enough laps to get most everyone you want.
Here are a couple examples:

Forgive the varying sizes...I had some of them uploaded for different purposes.

boy it's been a long time since a been there,is Path Valley the one built in the mountain and i think it a 1/4 mile track. Is Hill Valley still around?
cdifoto

Yeah Path Valley is the one in Spring Run. Built into a mountan and down in a pit sorta. Hill Valley is still around too. It's about as pathetic as Path Valley & Shippensburg though IMO...at least based on the photos on their website. I've only ever been to Path because I shot for them and Ship because I live there.
They could all be great if they had owners that knew how to build up an audience. Path Valley in particular almost never had anyone in the stands...their money came from the racing entrance fees and pit passes.
Here's a mediocre wide shot I took of Path Valley when they were trying to run in the track before getting totally rained out. I couldn't go any wider since I only had the 18-55mm kit lens, and was already backed up against the fence. Gives you a good idea though.

Do you think my 70-200 f-4 will ok fast enough for night shots or is the 2.8 the way to go.

You'll need all the speed you can get unless you're using flash for the night racing. For daytime, I used my really slow Bigma because of the awesome reach. It's an f/6.3 on the long end but was generally fast enough. A monopod also helped. I used it for tight shots like these:

If you stand on the inside, you can get away with a fast prime. I used the cheap 50mm f/1.8 most of the time there for stuff like this before I bought a flash:

Some people said they liked it better than the flashed stuff...but it was too much like effort so I geeked out and bought a flash unit. :-)

no problem. I went back and deleted the image tags so they're links though. I just remembered you aren't supposed to embed photos unless it's your own thread.
Sorry for hijacking your posts OP! I kinda get on a roll when I find someone else even remotely interested in these cars!

PADARREN: For hotlaps I was standing a little down the stretch from turn two. The first heat I was in turn two. For the rest I was in the infield, except I didn't have a ladder and wasn't able to get very many keepers.
I'm sure glad they have a few day races. I would think it would be much more difficult under the lights.

Yeah under the lights is harder because you have to dang near perfect your panning...ultra slow shutter speeds and all. Or you can just use flash and hide your screwups like I did. :D
