i've added mor Ram to my system, and CS2 has a default of 55% for memory, what do you all change this setting to?

EDIT -> PREFRENCES -> MEMORY & IMAGE CACHE

That's where it is.. you can change it to whatever you like.. just means the image cache will be larger.. Will use more memory to handle the images etc.. Google it..

I think it adjusts according to the amount of RAM it detects. How much you can adjust this "maximum" setting will depend on how much total RAM you have, and what other applications you run at the same time. There's no hard and fast answer as to what is best. As a general rule you shouldn't leave Windows with less than 256MB (although it will run with less). If you have lots of RAM (say at least 2GB) then there likely is a benefit in increasing the setting, but if you have 1GB or less I'd leave it as is.

I have 2GB, i've set CS2 to take up 75% of that, leaving 512MB for windows and my web browser/email. It works pretty well.

summerwind4 - in light of Tim's experience - you should know that the "sweet spot" for Windows XP is around 512MB RAM, i.e. you see an obvious increase in performance going from 256MB up to 512MB, but when you add more the benefits are more gradual.

Only certain kinds of application are able to make good use of lots of RAM. Generally they are server-applications like databases, but Photoshop and anything else that needs a lot of "workspace" can also benefit. For your 2GB, increasing the setting beyond 75% might be possible if you run nothing else, but I wouldn't recommend it. Regardless of what you do Windows is always doing its best (no flames please, you know who I'm talking to! ) to manage memory and in general it's best to let Windows look after memory than to assign it yourself.

Did you notice a significant difference between 55% and 75%?

I put it up to 75% as soon as I got CS2 so I can't compare them. I had to take RAM out so went back down to 1GB RAM and 512MB allocated to photoshop, it was quite a lot less responsive with only 512MB to play with.
