Hey, F, I think I have seen this very vehicle featured recently in a photo magazine when a guy went shooting in a scrapyard.... Please, let me emphasise, I am not hinting in any way that this shot was not taken by you! :D
Certainly it is an interesting amphibuous thing. I guess it was used primarily for US forces Germany during the cold war and all the anticipated river crossings in central Europe. I should certainly like to know more
Maybe some of our US friends could give more detail?

Well it was certainly in a scrapyard!
It's in a yard owned by pounds ship owners and ship breakers in portsmouth in the uk. There are lot's of interesting things there and there used to even be old submarines but a lot of it has gone now and I think the whole site will be gone eventually to make way for new developments.
The owner of the yard has huge buildings full of old planes and cars and many other interesting things, he has vehicles and set peices from lots of famous movies like indiana jones!
I saw all about it on a tv show once but have often seen the old ships and tanks whilst travelling into portsmouth so one day I went to get a closer look and got all sorts of interesting shots.
I went with my friend chris and took my pro1 and he had my g3 and we both walked around and just snapped away till our cards were full.
That's chris you can see in the picture.

What you describe certainly matches what I read in, I think, Practical Photography Magazine.
Cheers, Mate! :)

Is that thing as big as it looks? Could set up a rival ferry service to the IOW with that thing.
