Uncle Sam was good to me this year and I'm looking into some new glass. Since I made the move to Canon I've only picked up this 17-85mm. I want to eventually end up with a maybe a Tokina 12-24, 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 2.8L IS, and a few primes in between like the 50mm f1.4... and maybe a fisheye.

I'm taking a long trip to Europe later this year and I'll mostly be shooting landscapes & buildings so I'll put the 70-200 IS on hold for now. I read the 24-70 was a sweet lens and same goes for that Tokina 12-24 when shooting wide. The only reason I'm no longer looking into the 10-22 EF-S is because one day I might step up to a FF body.

If I were to give you guys my current setup plus another say... $1000-1500 USD how would you spend it? And yes, I'm willing to sell my current lens to pay for a new one(s). What do you think?

Mike

IMHO - These questions can be answered only by you. Each person has his/her own needs, requirements, and likings.

The Tokie is not designed for FF bodies either.

I suspect the 17-40 L is about the best, most practical walkaround for urban shooting ... or its daft priced faster brother! I would get a 50mm and 85mm too. The new crop of fast fella's from Tamron and Canon also look like they might just be worth waiting for tho'.

Get the 10-22. That and the 17-85 will cover all the outdoor needs you describe. Maybe one fast prime (50mm 1.4 or even 1.8) for low light. The whole lot will weigh less than some people's camera body + one lens. Spend the rest on your holiday!

I too plan to get a FF digital in a few years. Decades have taught me to buy what I need when I need it. The EF-S lenses are designed for your camera - buy them, enjoy them and then sell or give away the whole kit. That way you will start afresh with the latest of everything. That's my plan anyway!

Get the EF-S 10-22, just consider it part of the cost of the crop camera- its a great lens. I would not have gone for a crop camera witout it.

hmmm... yeah I did just realize the Tokina is meant for the cropped bodies, thanks fStopJojo.

The 17-40 looks good condyk, and now that I check the price it's definately an "affordable" L lens. Is the difference night & day compared to my 17-85 even though is doesn't have IS and they're both f/4?

I think I'm gonna take one last trip to Samy's Camera and play around with some lenses and see what feels best. I have nothing else to do today.

Get the 10-22mm it's a great lens and you can sell it for just about what you will pay for it when you make the chage.

Ok I just got back from the camera store and tried out several of the above lenses.

The 17-40 was great! It's silky smooth, quiet and still pretty compact.
The 24-70 was great too but kinda big & heavy and a little out of my price range.
The 10-22 is well... wide. It's smoother & faster than I expected too.
The 50 1.4 was a nice little lens.

I also got to try out a 5D and I must say FF makes a huge difference when shooting wide.

I think I'm gonna start by getting the 17-40. I'm also seriously reconsidering that 10-22, it's so nice. I guess down the road I could still get a decent price for it when I move up to FF.

Another thing, paying retail... it's just not for me. ;) When the sales guy told me the prices I was like, "Yeah that's cool, I'll be back." I'm probably gonna go with B&H again or check out ebay.

The are not both f/4. the 17-40 is constant f/4. The 17-85 is only f/4 at the wide end, it is variable aperture. I am not sure the real need for IS on a lens this light.

Don't get all concerned on the fact you may go FF. Get that 10-22, you won't regret it. If you do eventually go down that track, who says you need to dump the 20D??

I've just taken delivery of the 50 1.4 and the 10-22 and they are both very sweet. The fact i've been eyeing off the Mark II for quite some time, and now the N, didn't hold me back. There's no point in me losing the 300D when i move to the N.

It just creates for more options.

Good luck

$1500 eh.

Sigma 10-20
Canon 35mm f/2
Canon 50mm f/1.4
Canon 85mm f/1.8

Or if you're not a fan of primes...

Sigma 24-70EX ~
Sigma 70-200EX

But yeah... it all depends on what you wanna shoot =)

If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably get the 50 1.4 earlier. I seriously didn't take my 50mm off my AE-1 when I had them (lost at an event). It is a great lens for around $300 and it is so small.

You can't go wrong if you buy every canon lens..

$1500? Sell you EF-S 17-85. At a minimum you should get roughly $400 for it (depending on condition). Now you have $1900 to spend. Use the money to get yourself a 50 f1.4 to plug the inevitable whole in your line-up and for those times you're going to need a fast prime during your vacation. You've already got yourself the 17-40L, now top it off with a 70-200 f/2.8L IS and you've got your whole range covered. ;)

17-40L
50 f1.4
70-200L

Hell, you really don't even need L glass. This is just what I would do on your budget. ;)

Yeah but I just bought the 17-40 a couple hours ago so that's gonna subtract itself from my budget. Sorry if I beat anyone to it ;) but I snagged it off ebay for $610. Yeah $400 seems about right for my current lens which will definately help. I'm seriously considering that 10-22 now. I'll see how much my tattoos come out to tomorrow, they're also gonna cost a pretty penny. Believe me, I really want that 70-200 bad but I'm gonna try to save it for when I really need it. Decisions, decisions...
