Can someone tell me if there is a point to the embedded jpegs in the RAW format? As I understand it you need software to extract the jpeg. So couldn't you just use the same software to save the RAW as a jpeg (or any other format) and save some space in the file?

Thanks

You must have a JPG. There's no option not to save one when shooting. All you can do to minimise space is set the size to small.

The command to extract JPGs is part of the function of the standard conversion software, so it's not an "extra" as such.

Some people like to use the JPG as a "proof".

Roger,

Are you sure about this? Perhaps I am misunderstanding something, but both my 1Ds and 10D have the option to capture RAW only.

I think that if you will check you will find that RAW also includes an embedded JPEG image and that you have the choice of 6 different sizes/compression ratios for that JPEG. If you have the English version of the 10D manual then you will find that information on page 47.

The 10D RAW files all have a jpeg embedded within them - you can't turn it off, only change the size of it.

Are you confusing this with simultaneous RAW & JPEG?

I have heard that the 10D must save the embedded jpeg in order to display the photo on the screen. That may be why you can't "turn off" the embedded jpg. Just a thought. Do D30s & D60s have embedded jpgs?

Just got my D10 this week so, I'm still getting up to speed...

As I understand it, you need the software to convert Canon's proprietary version of 'RAW' files to the more universal standard 'TIF' format. I don't think Canon's version of it's 'RAW' files are readable by any of the graphics editing software... perhaps because their structure INCLUDES imbedded JPG file information... I don't know for sure.

You get the JPG files anyway, along with the ability to choose the 'size' and 'compression' no matter which 'Mode' in which you choose to operate. Matter of fact, the option of saving in 'RAW' format (with imbedded JPG information) is available only in the Camera's 'Creative Zone' Modes.

So, specifically in the case of the 1Ds, if you choose RAW image quality, which results in a single TIF file, are you guys saying that the TIF file has JPEG imbedded in it?

Not that I care one way or the other, just curious to know.

No... I'm not.

I know nothing about the 1Ds system.

The RAW file generated by the 10D needs the Canon-supplied software to convert it to a standard TIF format... devoid of the embedded JPG information and readable by PS, etc.

What I was trying to ask was, is there any reason to choose a higher quality jpeg embedded in the RAW file? Since the RAW can be converted in software to TIFF or JPEG is it better to save space on the CF by selecting small embedded JPEG or is there a use for a larger one?

Thanks

Already adressed above in a previous post:
