I had a bash at similar shots yesterday but they were nowhere near as good as these.

Thanks Racketman.
I probably had one advantage- this was taken around the base of one of my bonsai shrubs so I could get the lens nice and low :)

Very beautifull pictures of the moss Brian.

Lovely textures and colours. Must try some of the moss in our house plant pots. Were they handheld with flash?
I must try comparing natural light, tripod and a long exposure versus handheld with flash diffuser. Good idea?

Thanks Jose,
Must admit I only normally start looking at things like this when I can't find any bugs :)

Thanks Mike,
Always a good idea to try different lighting conditions.
Above were taken with flash but the light was good so the flash component was low.
I've taken a lot of comparison pics of natural vs flash and in general find I prefer the flash pics especially where the flash is used only to fill in say one stop or two. My diffuser/flash is a lot better diffused than the sun :) but obviously it depends on the effect you are after and how much close background there is.

Thanks Al,
They do make a big difference- I routinely have 33mm of ETs on which allows me a full focus range of about 0.7:1 to 1.5:1 and normally have my closeup lens in my pocket which gives me upto 3.4:1 with that amount of ETs.

Wow...Brian,
Every one of your post is something to look out for...they are excellent in photography and in the study of insects/plants.
Reading your post always remind me of the days in school...always exciting and rewarding in the new "things" of life.
BTW, excellent rendition of the moss.
