Play with higher shutter speeds.
You'll still get the motion effect up to 1/320th easy.

very good shots for 1st time panning! and good color as well. i can see how metering could get thrown off with such fast moving subjects as the top fuel guys. where on the course were you shooting from? lens? body?

for crisper shots, try a monopod/tripod and getting them right after the front wheels hit the ground after starting.

Thanks for the advice. I have a Rebel XT with a 70-200mm f4L. I sat at mid track in the stands. I had a starting line pass but I wanted to work on trying to pan for the 1st time. http://i.pbase.com/o4/90/594490/1/57228048.IMG_0987.jpg
