Is there any advantage (or disadvantage) in having Windows XP rather than Windows 98 for use in either card reader downloading or direct connection downloading of photos with the G2?
Thanks!

I use Windows XP and it is straight forward to download files from a CF with a PCMCIA reader. I have not tried connecting the camera so I can not speak to that.
Plugging the card into the slot adds it as a removable drive so one can do drag and drop to copy the files and then erase the CF.

Hi,
Windows Xp is great with the G2! As the previous respondent says you can transfer images via a PCMCIA reader - you can also connect the camera via the supplied USB cable using the WIA driver (NOT the TWAIN driver!) and convert RAW files the same connection method using Canon's own converter.
Hope this helps,
Barry

I've had no problem doing the same thing with Windows 98... plugging the CF card into a PCMCIA reader, or bringing RAW files through the USB connector. It's pretty painless.

I have been using Windows XP and have no problems. If I open too many programs at one time or get in a hurry I have had ZoomBrowse lock up or slow down, but considering the problems that existed in Windows 95 and 98 (ei the old blue screen) XP has been a pleasure to use.

Don't know whether this matters to you or not but XP tends to have native drivers for many multimedia gadgets such as card readers. I don't know how anyone could stand downloading the huge files off the G2 in high quality mode over usb 1.1, eek! It was enough to drive me to the bottle!
Bought a Lexar firewire CF card reader and it downloads a full card lickety split, never tried usb 2 but I hear it compares with firewire in speed and tends to cost a little less. You spent all that money on the camera now save your sanity and choke up another 70 bucks for a good reader.

There is no problem using USB 1.1. It still only takes a couple of mins to download a card of high qual images. Slow down. Relax and enjoy.

I use Windows XP but your question is in regards to download speed .
XP is definitely geared for digital cameras et. al and more stable. But if your still using Windows 98 and want to save cash there's no rush to make that transistion. There will always be be another operating system before you know it. Download Cam2pc on htttp://www.nabocorp.com/cam2pc/.
The question about speed. I've got USB 2,XP, PCMCIA
and I've also got an ulcer. Make yourself a cup of tea
and slow down. Happy snapping
