as everyone can probably guess, i'm just starting out. i asked earlier if my 420 EZ flash would work with my 10D and found out i needed an ex series. So, i just got a 550EX and it works great. i was wondering if there is an easy (inexpensive) way to use the 550 as a main flash and the 420 as a slave. i want play around and learn more about how to play with light. Oh, i also want to preserve the TTL. Thank you very much

The 550EX has, built into it, an ETTL transmitter that alows it to remotely trigger other 550EX or 420EX flashguns. The 420EX can receive the signals, but not transmit them, so it can function as a 'slave', but not as a 'master' The 550EX can be used as a 'slave' or a 'master'. ETTL will work with these flashguns.
Alternatively, you can use the ST-E2 ETTL transmitter to control both flashguns.
Consult your 550EX and 420EX documentation for details.

Just to clarify, i have a 420EZ not a 420EX. i don't know if this can be done wirelessly or if i need to wire it, or even if the EZ can function as a true slave and only fire when the other fires (if it senses light burst)
thanks

Oops! Sorry - my mistake. I'm afraid I don't know much about the EZ flashguns, save that they aren't fully ETTL compatible (I believe).

I use the ST-E2 and 550EX as a slave and got the chance to play with a 540EZ. I don't believe the 540EZ has the slave capability, or at least I couldn't figure it out!
There wasn't any slave switch like on the 550EX. There's also no mention of this on the product specifications so I would asssume that this won't work as a slave unit.
In your situation, I would probably get the ST-E2 and the 420EX if I had extra cash. Using the 550EX as a master on the shoe mount of the body does not provide very much lighting flexibility at all.
Best of luck to your endeavours.
