View Full Version : Coffee Drinkers...

I drink a lot of coffee.

I am a professional.

I'm in the midst of fashioning a travel-mug holder for my Computrekker AW. If I could figure out how to make one that would hold two cups without spilling one, I would.

Anyone else here addicted to this stuff and, if so, whaddya' drink?

I like plain, good ol' fashioned black coffee. Yuban is my drug of choice. 7-11 is always good. Under no circumstances will I drink the raspberry-mocha-mint-creme-girly-boy-foofoo coffee they sell at Starbucks.

So, what's your poison?

I used to work beside a place that was pretty cheap. A caramel mocha with some chocolate sprinkled on top was the bees-knees. The sugar hit from that baby would cure the mid morning or mid afternoon blues.

Having said that, a large and strong Cappucino sends shivers (the good kind) down my spine first thing in the morning.

Well, being a product of the Navy, I've come to appreciate fine Navy swill, but I like it with a little cream and sugar. Black is too bitter and no foo-foo drinks allowed! Just a good ol' fashioned "cup of Joe."

Ditto; I retired after 20 years and 11 days (not that I was counting).

Folks who've never been in the military just can't appreciate the finer aspects of coffee that comes in an olive-green ten-pound tin with a stock number on the side...

I drink double esspresso at home with skinny froth made traditional style via my Classic Gaggia. I rarely drink coffee out as it sucks most of the time. I am not addicted; I drink a couple of cups a day. I use Illy coffee as it's as good as any bean grind I've ever tried and less fuss. I have a burr grinder I never use if anyone is interested.

Prefer strong and recent brew time, straight up.

Hawaiian coffee made with a french press is as foo-froo as it gets, and this is a very tasty.

Being Canadian, we have another choice of java when on the road, Tim Horton's. Nothing fancy about it, comes in four sizes served as you like with cream or milk being the only choices. There is always a strategically placed Timmy's right where your cup empties or you need to unload the last one:lol:

I'm addicted to coffee, expresso, no sugar.
I reached the point where I moed manualy (with a tradicional moer) my coffee beans only in the exact moment when I was going to drink it to keep the flavor and aroma.
Then after much experimentation, I opted for this system:

I must say I'm a coffee geek. I love coffee! I'm a micro-roaster, meaning I roast my own coffee, mostly for personal consumption. I keep on hand a stash of green beans and I roast just enough to last me 4 or 5 days. Right now I have a cache of Kenyan AA (DeCaf), Honduran Nueve Posas and a Puro Scuro blend that is great for drip or espresso. I just love roasting coffee, it's a hobby where one can experiment a lot, just like photography.

Like several here I have a Gaggia Classic that I use for making espresso and capuccino. For drip I usually use my Chemex brewer, but sometimes I use a french press or a Silex vacuum pot.

I'm a coffee addict. Either straight (black) from a cafatiere or with a little milk

Usually Whittards Guatamalen... get them to grind it and stick in airtight jars in the freezer.

Their description from here (http://www.whittard.co.uk/ProductDetailsList.aspx?pid=guat&cid=c3011&language=en-GB) "These remarkable giant beans have all the best Guatemala flavours - dark chocolate and honey. Heavy, aromatic and warming."

Dunkin' Donuts regular XL...cream/milk and sugar. It's so bad that they don't even ask what I want...they just start pouring the coffee. If I throw them a curve and ask for a smaller size it seems to knock their universe out of whack.

Our roaster client is a purist as well.
Watched him put down 10 shots of espresso in about 2 hours!
Guy has an iron gut. He is in France right now vacationing and doing "market & product research". But had a bit of bad luck. Had his passport and $1500 stolen from him the day he arrived.
Bet he'll drown his sorrows in a few shots-o-fine-French-brew.

I like a good cuppa Joe - no frilly stuff for me. You can keep your Columbian, too - I like full-bodied coffee like Mocha Java, Sumatra Mandheling, Ethiopian, and the like. Regardless of the variety, if the coffee is good I take it with sweetener (non-sugar, please) and no creamer.

When we go out to dinner I often finish up with a coffee with Amaretto - no cream.

However, nothing quite hits the spot as coffee served in one of these:

I *live* on coffee. I drink a pot (8 cups worth) before even leaving the house in the morning. Here it is at 7:38pm EST and there's a fresh pot that just finished brewing. I'm sick, and I need help. :D

For off-the-shelf stuff I stick with Melita Classic/Premium. I have every coffee-making device known to man. A combo coffeemaker/espresso machine with clock and timer, a standalone espresso maker, a French press, a big glass brew carafe... When I go camping I have a special stainless steel French press. I hate most commodity coffee (Folgers, Eight O'Clock, etc.), think Starbucks sucks and tend to prefer good Samatra or similar full bodied coffees, ground from bean.

Just a bit of trivia...anyone know where coffee got the nickname of "cuppa Joe?" For those interested, in the early 1900s (can't remember which decade), Josephius Daniels was the Secretary of the Navy. He's the guy that prohibited alcohol onboard US Navy ships (most other countries still allow it, BTW). Anyways...he directed the Navy to furnish coffee instead of alcohol to keep the sailors warm when out to sea. Out of sarcasm, the sailors started calling coffee "Joe" - after Sec Daniels. Eventually, the nickname stuck and spread to the civilian community...worthless info but still interesting!

Don't fall for that Kopi Luwak coffee. It's supposed to be coffee beans that have passed through a civet's digestive system, collected by natives out of the poop and then roasted. Scammers have heard about this and concoct their own Kopi Luwak by cooking a low grade of Vietnamese Robusta beans in chicken fat, then pass it off as kopi Luwak, selling it as high as $70 to $100 a pound to yuppies who don't know any better.

Hehe no offense but you guys from other side of ocean, don't have any idea what real coffee even is ;) Closest thing to real coffee I ever managed to get in USA, was in some small village behind gods back on road between Yosemite and San Francisco... and it was also about 3 times more then anything Starbucks serves, even though it was 5 times smaller cup :)
Otherwise real coffee is something what you can't pour in half galon cup. Personally I preffer cappuccino, but real cappuccino is far from anything what Starbucks considers as cappuccino. It's made of really small espresso (no idea about real amount but I would say something like 1/2 dcl, sorry no idea what would that be in non-metric units), with bit of hot milk and foamed milk. All together fits into small coffe cup not some half galon Starbucks cup :)
And no I'm not addicted, I usually never manage to drink more 6 or 7 coffees a day, so I don't think I'm addicted :)

One of these days I have to pick up a vacuum pot...

Get one! It always brews coffee at the perfect temperature, resulting in perfect coffee all the time! It is also a joy to watch it work, it's like a science experiment as the water flows from one chamber to another through heat and negative pressure. It's like a science experiment.

I got my Silex vacuum pots from a flea market, and they are around 50, 60 years old I think. They're pain to wash though as one really has to be careful.

Can't stand the stuff.

My wife on the other hand has a machine in the kitchen. It seems to fire hot steam at me from 20 yards and I swear it can see me. It has more buttons than my keyboard but I still haven't found how to alter the shutter speed.

If the house was on fire my wife would rescue it first! ;)

straight black coffee for me.no hazelnut flavor or any of that.when i first started drinking coffee i would put so much cream and sugar in it you would've thought it was hot chocalate.working nights for 10 yrs broke me of that. these guys would fix coffee, and if it called for 4 scoops they added 6.you would definitely need a few adult beverages after work to counteract the effects of that brew.that was 20 yrs ago.thank god i no longer work nights.i would probably not survived:lol: i too have to vote for tim horton's coffee (black)

I bought an extra large coffee from Coffee Time in Toronto yesterday and, I have to say, it was better than any cup of coffee I've ever gotten at Tim Horton's...
