Great site! My first post after some time lurking. I held off, because I haven't bought a digital yet. The lens issue encouraged me to register, just to post a link to Photodo:

http://www.photodo.com/nav/prodindex.html

I can understand why regulars get bored seeing the same questions repeated; perhaps the regular flagging of Photodo as a source of independent advice would help. MTF tests here are supposedly performed by Hasselblad.

If anyone doubts why L lenses perform better, just check their charts. Also, note the quality of some modest aperture lenses over their wide aperture counterparts. (I changed my 28/1.8 for a 24/2.8 a few months ago, just on the strength of the Photodo charts).

My big question also annoys regulars, but will be shared by many lurkers. When is the D30 upgrade coming?

Herb,

Besides Photodo, try www.photographyreview.com
Lots of opinions and ratings for just about every lens known to man. It's user-based, so if you want to write your own evaluations, you can do it. I find it more useful than Photodo.

Rumors of a D30 successor are brewing, and popular opinion is that it will be announced at PMA in February. Concensus opinion (ie, rumor) is that it will be a full-frame CMOS based on either the 1V or 3 body.

PS: I think enough is enough re: Gandini. His points are valid... basic questions can generally be answered with a search, but specific questions that cannot be found by searching deserve to be answered. Is that acceptable?
