Hi forum,

Hopefully will get my 30D with EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens on Friday (16th).

I have just learned that the lens does not come with its EW-73B lens hood.

Has anyone any opinions about how important it is to have this hood with this lens?

Its a shame a £500 lens is not supplied with one yet a £200 Sigma zoom does!

Thanks in advance for any comments.

It's a short flower hood. It just prevents lens flare in bright light, mostly outdoors. Costs about $30 US from B&H. Not a big price deal considering the camera and lens cost.
It looks cool too...:)

Want a picture of it?

I have it. It keeps the lens from getting banged around and keeps you from having to put a filter on it to keep fingers, etc... off of it. Also helps with flare, and as stated above it looks good. Get it.

Yes cmosman, it is a shame that the such a wonderful and certainly not cheap lens. I would never mount my 17-85 without my hood.

here's what it looks like.

The hood you refer to was designed for a 35mm film or what is known as a FF digital format. Therefore, because your 30D is a smaller format the EW-73B hood loses much if not most of it's effectiveness at blocking stray light. This because your camera is using only a part (center part) of the light coming through the lens that the hood was designed to protect. Also, even with a FF format the hood is effective at blocking stray light only at the lens' widest settings. Someone may be able to point you toward one of Canon's other hoods that would do a better job of blocking stray light. But, regardless, a hood should be used for protection.

Why do you say that hood is designed for a FF? It's only used on the EF-S 17-85 lens and I highly doubt Canon would not take the crop factor into acount when designing it.

Sorry, of course you are correct. I failed to reconize that it is an EF-S lens. I guess that is because I don't really take any interest in them, I only use EF lenses.

Thanks for the replies and picture from 20Der, looks like I will be geeting the hood then. I will see if I can get it half price as spending so much on the camera kit.

I may be lucky!
