View Full Version : Basic S50 Questions

I just bought a Powershot S50 (loving the camera, BTW) and I have two very basic questions.

In doing my research I noticed a couple reviews stating that over time the labels on the settings knob wear off and become unreadable.

1) Has anyone here actually experienced something similar with their cameras and

2) Would putting something like clear nail polish over the labels slow this down or would that be a "very bad idea?"

I've read those reviews as well. I've had mine about 3 weeks and have used it extensively. No wear... yet... I don't know if I'd put the nail polish though... I can't stand the way it smells and I'd be afriad it might drip down into the area surrounding the knob... just my opinion though...

you'd better not pure or put anything on your s50.
you never know how it ends up.
just be carefull not to handle the knob with dirty or sweat hands.

I wouldn't pour anything on it either... ;)

My S50 labels are peeling too. I've put a clear adhesive tape over the dial to stop peeling. It's not pretty, but it works.

Putting nail polish, glue or tape on knobs can keep the labels from peeling, but the chemicals in these products can also adversely affect the knob. Nail polish and glue in particular could melt the paint or plastic in the knob or adjoining parts (from droplets or fumes.)

If you do decide to add chemicals to the knob (clear paint, polish, glue...) perhaps try a sample dot first and see what happens. Also go easy on the application. It is likely better to apply twice than try to take off too thick of an application.

Be very careful. A stuck knob (due to a drop of stuff between the cracks) could render the knob immovable, and costly to repair (if at all).

Perhaps replacement knobs are available?
