From the posts, it is alarming to see many 10Ds and lenses fail.
Is it worth to buy extra warranty on the equipment?

I bought one on the camera just because I have some mystical faith in the power of an extended warranty. Rather like if you have one nothing bad will happen to it. I have extended warranties on all my electronics so I am WELL protected :)

I usually don't go for extended waranties,. but I did for my 10D,.. I managed to take advantage of a great "loophole"
I got my 10D at a "BestBuy" superstore.
(at the time they were the only place I could find one,. B&H couldn't get them etc...)
Well it seems that "BEstBuy" had never encountered a $1500.00 camera before,. so the only extended warranty they had to sell me was the one for "...any digital camera $500.00 or more.."
So for a VERY low price I have a 3 year TOTAL replacement plan.
WHICH INCLUDES!!!!!!
If for ANY reason BestBuy can not repair or replace the Camera,. they will replace it with The same brands Newer model....
So in three years I could end up with a free 10D-2 upgrade.

that depends on the cost of additional warranty. I decided to have extra 3 years protection which includes accidental damage for only £109 extra. So now im not treating my 10D like a fragile piece of china. Im more relaxed and can enjoy it more so def go for it if you can afford it. Canon repair isnt cheap!
Also check if the warranty includes sensor cleaning, I checked mine which does, personally im not bothered about unless its really bad.... hate to be without the 10D for 2 weeks or more!

Righto CyberDyneSystems!!,
I paid $99.00 for a 4 year BestBuy Warranty/Product Replacement plan. Exceptional value. Less comprehensive coverage at a local camera shop for three years (not four) ran just over $300.00
Considering that all stores & photo shops send DSLR's in to Authorized service centers for repair and that BB offers a product protection/replacement plan that improves upon the warranty service for less than 1/3 the cost of specialty shops - it was a no brainer for me.
BestBuy's service plan is still $99.00 for 4 years on Digital Camera's >$500.00 here in Minnesota. (I still remember the BB clerk asking his manager to verify the sale because he couldn't believe the extended service plan was only $99.00 :) ).
That said - I had saved until I could afford the more expensive service plans because IMO, if you have to budget and plan to be able to afford a $1,500 piece of equipment - you certainly won't be able to afford any repairs in a timely fashion. Money well spent in my book.

I paid $300 for a one year total replacement warranty even if I damage the camera. It is renewable every year. I have a feeling that when the 10D's successor is released, I may trip over a crack in the pavement and my 10D will go flying... higher and higher then renter Earth's atmosphere in a blaze of fire and impact in the parking lot in around the corner from Ritz Camera where I purchased it. Seriously though, I would reccomend that everybody purchase an extended warranty with their camera. Even service centers have trouble returning them to "As new" condition. Especially due to all of the environmental seals and such.
