I received yesterday the kenko tubes and made today some tests with the 50 mm 1.8 to have an idea about the magnification factor and the minimal focus distance that these tubes can gives. Here are the results.

Are you sure that the focus distance for the 50mm f/1.8 is 36cm?

Mine says 45cm.
Maybe this is referring to the MK1 version.
On my Mk1 45cm is the first mark, but the focus mechanism allows focussing slightly closer than that.

Did you measure?
If you did, where did you measure from?
The front element of the lens?
Maybe 45cm that is writen on the lens is the distance from the sensor.

I measure from the front of the lens.Distance on the scale usually measures from the film plane. So 36 cm from the front of the lens would be about right.

And for anyone reading this thread, the "film plane" is indicated on the camera body by the marking just to the left of the viewfinder and to the right of the mode dial (looks like the greek letter phi).

That's where long focal length Macro lenses come into their own. You can get better magnification with a Sigma 150mm macro at a distance of 20cm than Yb98 got at 5cm. Costs much more than a few tubes of course!

Certainly, a 150mm macro is more useful for the increased working distance, but you will NOT get greater magnification without extension tubes with a Sigma 150mm macro. The Sigma 150mm macro does 1:1 without any other accessories. A 50mm f/1.8 with all 3 Kenko tubes does approx. 1.5:1. Obviously, you add a tube to the 150mm Macro and you'll get as close or closer, with superior image quality, but for a cheap macro setup, the 50mm plus extension tubes gets you REALLY close, and really good.

Just for the record:
The longer the focal length, the more tubes you need to add magnification. While a 68mm set of Kenko tube sure will push a 150mm macro closer that its stock 1:1, the results will not approach those of a MPE-65. There is also a point at which the stack of tubes increases magnification and decreases depth of field to the point that it is hard to find a sharp zone in the pictures. This is the same as working with the 65 but having a heavy lens on the end of a huge stack of tubes makes it harder to find that exact point compared to the shorter lens. Beginners may find it better to start with 1:1 and work their way up before trying ant portrait heads. The light weight 50 and tubes is a lot easier to handle and the wide aperture makes focus placement simple (focus at f/1.8, shoot at f/16).
Some insects are scared away with a 50 and tubes but othere species are completely oblivious to your presence. The problem with close distance is often that you cast a shadow on the subject. This, too, gets better with practice.

I got a set of extension tubes today to try my hand at Macro photography on the cheap. Here's a couple of test shots using the lens I have on hand all hand held at the kitchen table which is why there's some motion blur. Still I'm pretty happy with the potential of this system.

Since there is no glass within the tubes - they are simply "tubes" - the optical quality will be equally good from any tubes, regardless of price.
The problem with the cheap tubes that you've linked to is that there are no electrical connections to couple the camera body to the lens. Thus the camera cannot pass on the desired aperture setting to the lens. There is a workround, documented in the user reviews, but it's a point to note. Also, and I'm not sure this is a big deal, you will lose AF, again because the body and lens cannot communicate. With macro photography I think manual focus is more common so again this is probably not a huge issue.
One final point that may or not be a factor - I have no idea how robust the physical connections are between the cheap tubes and whether there is any risk of "wobble" affecting stability. There is probably nothing to worry about but it is one final consideration. For the money, though, what have you got to lose? If you're happy with the aperture workround then give them a whirl.

Actually, I'm not even sure how to change the aperture with the DOF button. I tried holding it down while taking out the lens but it still says F 00 on my display.
If Kenko tubes can allow that then I am definitely in the market for one. Maybe I should start saving up...

^ it will indicate as F00 because it has no connection with the lens via those tubes (as far as I know), so yea, it will stay at whatever aperture you've set it at before you hold down the DOF button and remove the lens from the body at the same time.

But if you do it right (make sure that you put on/remove the lens directly from the body, not with the tubes) you should be able to look inside the lens and see the blades stopped down.

Your shots are a great example of amazing photography with inexpensive gear. Great work!
