View Full Version : Who'll predict my 5000th post ...

condyk
18th of March 2006 (Sat), 16:01
Ok ... as a funda-mental right of passage  the 5000th post can only be celebrated in two ways:

1. Firstly, by purchasing an unnecessarily expensive bit of gizmology like the 30D and pretending it will take better pictures than what you have already.

2. Secondly, running a daft competition to see which sad loser can guess the subject matter of my important 'transitional' post and, by way of cheesy reward (literally!!) offering a special prize of a free Lens Sock (R) (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=147626) to the winner, wherever they may reside on this dying planet of ours.

So, having already thrown away lots of good and hard earned cash on the pointless 30D, I am now running this exclusive competition.

There are only a limited number of possible responses I would guess so even the most IQ challenged here (such as the infamous Three Stooges) have a chance to guess the correct answer, but do take care when sticking a pin into your computer monitor chums

Please add your response and you can personally help influence the course of world history.

,,,and you have to get a big fat marker pen out and write 'my 5000th post' on a plain white t-shirt and wear it on the self portrait : )

Sheesh, I didn't even realize you had that many posts.

I think you should post a proper self-portrait with your 30D (don't even know if you have it) and one of your cheap, best-in-the-world primes.

Congrats Dave on reaching 5000 and more important the purchase of the 30D.
It's a big jump from the XT....I think you will really enjoy it :)

Dan

BTW......Only problem with the 30D is it only uses Canon lenses.....LOL

Life is choices: Choices between integrity and profit.
Choices between conscience and career.
Choices between taking the easy way out and the only way out.
You chose well. Congratulations on the 30D and the 5000th post.

Well...nothing special about his 5,000th post. Another comment about how good "old" glass is.

Yes, I should have posted a 'I'm looking for another lens to buy and sell' post and followed your lead ... I was thinking of doing a Duckie shot for fun but just couldn't lower myself to that level of pointless banality :p I'll leave that stuff to the Pet-Kal v's Dante shoot out planned. Let's hope they can at least achieve 'sharpness'

I do feel it is a craic to counter the rubbish of a minority here who seem to think you can 'buy' a good shot and that only Canon can deliver (even you have changed your tune on that recently, but you still haven't had the exposure to enough alternative stuff to really make a significant shift ... yet!)

I'm interested in developing and encouraging the basics of the 'craft' rather than encouraging people to spend money many of them can't afford ... and indeed don't need to. The results are often obvious unless you have the fetishistic 'Duckie sharpness' orientation I alluded to above   I suppose in that sense my post was predictable.

The Result!

Anyway, it's been very difficult to choose the recipient of the free Lens Sock (R). Mr Africa wrote beautifully about my worldview, like a true brother ... and only a fellow traveller could have written that. But it would be too cute of me to present him with the sock :o almost like a fawning wish for me to be approved of and recognised :)

Mr Peahen is always good value and indeed he hit the nail on the head in a batty inverse kinda way ... but at the end of the day I cannot resist calling him a 'misguided and confused twazzack' He made the offer and I accepted it!

Mr Blue Deuce was accurate but then spoilt his chances by mentioning 'off the wall'. So near sir and yet ... it cannot be.

The desire of some other members to see me in the flesh is disturbing, BB (in a sofistiKated Freudian reaction formation), Ronald, andrewaaa5, drookie, especially Mod Maureen who wants a nude in the bath shot ... surely inappropriate with her husband recently returned from hospital  and then there is sweet SuzyViews confession that 'I feel like I know you so well already' which scares me as only the confession of a stalker could :p

Raitch is close but misses out by a single post. His follow up post linking to Zeiss glass shows much promise for the future.

Sageone then has a decent go and the answer is I've mainly been baiting the Three Stooges here

Wireburn not quite intuitive enough as he goes for the obvious rather than the subtle or twisted. Not a bad go son, but try harder ;)

Danny Boy suggests 'It's a big jump from the XT....I think you will really enjoy it' but I doubt it'll take better pictures, so really to the purist non-Duckie shooter it has to be a waste of cash unless the handling redeems the silly box of tricks. That is my sincere hope, or the baby is on eBay.

Sharp Boy Bob lives up to his name and deserves a 'house point' for his incisive prediction ... but we all knew that anyway but just chose to not vocalise it, so he's not quite deserving the ultimate prize this time.

That leaves three noble Knights ...

My S-Ex Maniac chum Al Addict deserves applause for his stern warning, but to offer the prize would mean a risk of henceforth living with a care for the opinions of others and that would never do. His follow up shot holds wonderful venom but he knows I both post and shoot ... unlike so many :p I am safe from the implied charge.

So, it's a head to head lads and ladies ...

'I predict it will be a short sentence full of nit wittery, shamelessly extolling your humble pie opinion about some nonsensical waste of hard earned pittance. Do I get the sock or not ..........Happy 5000...........'

'Easy, a reply here in this thread, consumed with wity banter about red stripes, German or Russian folks, and us greedy AmeriKans (I believe that is how YOU spell it)'.

Joe or Mike? It would be easy to offer a prize to both and so avoid the tough decision that must be made ... but that is the cowards route. There has to be a single Sad Loser at the end of the day.

Mike makes a great bid with the silly yet correct spelling of AmeriKan, the mention of witty and banter ... juicy and tempting!

... but finally the Sadest of all the Sad Losers has to be Joe. A remarkable posting, where he mentions marvellous words/concepts such as consumed, nit, wittery, shamelessly, humble pie, nonsensical, pittance and sock in the same sentence. The boldness and directness of his plea 'Do I get the sock or not?' deserves an affirmation. A remarkable feet that promises much for the future. So Joe, PM me your address and the free Lens Sock (R) will be dispatched immediately. Use it and love it as we all luv you.

Hilarious.

Dave, you seem to be the one obsessed with the thought of "displaying" yourself to me. Somehow you seem to feel as though I am obsessed, first of all, with that particular lens. I'm a big fan, yes, but I'm not obsessed. I've never been obsessed with an inanimate object, and never will be. Secondly, I've never been obsessed with a man, either. If I were, you would surely be near the bottom of my list. I'm not sorry that I don't value old glass that gives nice results. I prefer to have "the nicer things in life". I get what life affords me. I tried all 3 of the popular mid-range zooms: the Sigma, the Tamron, and the L. The sigma was alright, but the colors seemed to be lacking, and it was too noisy for me. The Tamron was much more agreeable. Nice colors, decent contrast, and sufficient AF speed. However, it too was noisy, and the focus ring kept hitting my finger, and I felt as though it were breaking! The L was the only one of the three that I was completely satisfied with. Great weight, fantastic build, fast and near-silent AF, beautiful colors and nice contrast, great hood design (shut up, you know it's true), etc. Even if at a hefty price tag. I had the money, so I got one. I got rid of my first one to afford the 100-400L, which I had more use for in late last year and through the winter. The other one (yes, there were only 2) was simply a buy and sell, as I had an opportunity to make money. Most any person would have done the same. Now, I'm getting to the point where I'll need my standard zoom again (wedding season approaching), so I find myself searching for another. I don't have the money to keep all of the lenses I want, so I don't. That's another reason why I enjoy buying L lenses. They hold their value better than most. It allows me to buy and sell as much as I like, without usually losing any money. I do make money on occassion, but I use that for my other hobbies. I don't have a steady job, as I don't need one at the present.

Lol, this thread is too much. It really gives me a good start on a lazy Sunday. Dave, I still think that Lens Sock of yours looks awfully like an ancient prophylactic, a prototype when scientists postulated that a porous fabric would be as impermeable as the Bar Lev line (they were wrong on both accounts). At any rate, it certainly looks ribbed.
