I have a problem with overexposure on subjects where the source shines the most. The result is a complete lack of details(pure white) surrounded by a halo effect of a light grey. I was told by a Canon rep that it was a problem that was corrected with the latest firmware upgrade. After loading it on the G1, the problem persists.
Has anybody else experienced this with their G1?

I noticed the same thing with my photos soon after I bought it. My advice is to set exposure compensation to underexpose by a third of a stop. I found that this generally improved all of my photos except those that employed the built-in flash.

Left to its own metering the G1 often overexposes slightly. Look for the situations when this is likely to be a problem and try to meter to take the highlights into consideration. With landscapes I often frame to include more of the sky than I want in the final shot, press the shutter halfway to lock the meter reading, then recompose before taking the shot. This eliminates burn out in the sky.

As always, use the playback to monitor your shots for acceptable exposure. If you are unsure then underexpose further - this might produce a shot that looks a little dark at first, but some simple levels adjustments in your graphics software will bring it right back to life.

Have you tried spot metering? If the subject is back lighted, this can help. I am an "expert" with a month's experience ;)

The sun hasn't come out up here is the Pacific Northwest since I bought my Pro90. Got some great rain shots.
