Hi everyone :)

I have a simple question.

I will be attending the 2006 Canadian Grand Prix in June, and I would like to know if two 1 GB CompactFlash cards will be enough to cover me for shooting during the weekend (Thursday to Sunday). Since my camera has video capabilities, I will also be shooting video of the F1 cars, etc.

I have a Canon PowerShot S1 IS, and plan on attending all of the support events from Friday to Sunday.

I know it obviously depends on how much you shoot, but will 2 GB of storage be enough for me? I would hate to fly up to Montreal and not have enough capacity to shoot everything I want.

Thanks guys :)

My two cents would be -- it depends on you. How many images can you store on a 1G card? If you take lots of images when you are at an event like this then I suspect you do not have enough -- even if you download them in the evening. Memory cards are cheap.

This is very true... ah heck, maybe I'll just pick up two extra 1 GB cards on eBay, they're only $50 CDN or so nowadays anyway. That would bring my total storage capacity to 4 GB (I'm so good at math  ).

Cheers

1 gig lasted a month for me in europe with a 4 megapixel camera.
i figure it will last a weekend.

however the ladies and events are something you will want to capture.
I will be covering the mtl grandprix also. hope we get nice weather

I shot 3 gig at a 2 hour Ice Hockey match last night.... If you're stuck in the stands, 2Gb should be plenty... if you're the other side of the fence... buy more memory !

Thanks for the reference! Although, I have to take into consideration that I will be shooting lots of video as well, so I may need more memory than just 2 GB.

I definitely hope we have nice weather for the race. Although, I hope it won't be as hot as least years race. There was a heat wave in central Canada, and the temperature at the track was close to 40 celcius! I could do without one of those days again (or three) :p

Wow, that's a lot of shooting! I'll be snooping around all of the booths as well, with F1 cars on display and such, so I may need more than 2 GB afterall.

id look into some sort of portable storage, like a pd70x

I would get one, but I don't do long shoots enough to warrant the expenditure. I would much rather have multiple memory cards than have a device like that.

i suggest get some more cards. As you know there is plenty to shoot. On cresent street, everywhere else too for that matter. the 3 race days. you can practice panning.

you can always use the extra memory elsewhere.

Maybe i'll see you around on the weekend.

PS. the warmer it gets, the less the ladies wear and in MTL any excuse is a good excuse to shed clothes.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I definitely agree with your last statement

I actually shot that event last year. I went thought about 4 gig a quali session and 8gb on race day. (1dmk2 raw).

Where are your seats? The bleachers in the chicane is mint for shots from the stands. Many guys with track and hot passes even get into them to shoot. The bunkers out front however are where the money shots come from.

Expect to need about 300mm to get good shots.

I'm sitting in GS11, on the right hand side (closest to the pit exit, not obstructed by the trees).

Thanks for the tips, hopefully the S1 IS is up for the task.

Stick to Atmos, pit and paddock shots... you need the right tools to capture the on track action. It always seems big in the viewfinder, till you see the print... Sadly, the Si IS just isn't designed for this... With a clear space you might be able to pan a few...

Yeah, I'm certainly not expecting professional level shots with this camera :P

It's great for shooting video, but not high-speed action like Formula One cars.

Well, I went ahead and ordered two 1 GB SanDisk Ultra II cards from eBay at $47.99 USD a piece, can't beat that
