I know this has been ask x times but I still haven't seen a reasonable answer: so if anybody of you have ever seen a canon camera (i use a beatyfull A70) used as a webcam over usb, please tell me.
however, the canon sdk shoud make it possible and if i should be the first man on earth who need this, I will write the driver. but only If i am the first.

U can pick up really cheap webcam's these days, why not one of them?
I've heard of it working, sending a live stream to the computer, but it wasn't compatable with programs like messanger.

Someone made a post on this topic a while ago, said they got a reply from Canon saying something about them not being designed to run continuously capturing images and that they can/would heat up.
As ca70 said, webcams are cheap as chips now for a decent one so it's worth just buying a dedicated camera for this purpose.

Not to mention that PowerShot cameras (at leasetmy S45) requires a special AC adapter that replaces the battary and is not so comfertable to use (and I think is more expensive than a new webcam).
In short, why use a webcam - that only runs on battaries ?
About Canon's answer, regarding the continuous streaming.. now that it crap.
when you use the "remote capture" utility, and use the PC monitor to display what the camera "see", instead of using the LCD, youactually got streaming video in the right resolutin from your DigiCam... so Canon should think of a better answer

Ive never been a fan of canon suport, but there might be some truth to it (might).
Remote capture does do live streaming, but over an extended peorid of time it might cause a problem, mabey thats where the comming from.

but in that case it would be dangerous to use remote capture for capturing images over extended periods of time (that mode in which the camera takes a picture each so many minutes or seconds)

Probally, i wouldn't know cause i never use the thing (remote cap) or know the internals of the camera.
I think they must be talking about really long times though. Ive seen a post before about Cam4U or something, they kept taking photo's untill the battery ran out then put more in, but the camera was still working.

I managed to use my digital camera (Ixus V²) as webcam without video-in or stuff. In RemoteCapture you can turn on "viewfinder" so you can see the stream from the camera. The only problem is that it turns itself off after 120 secs or so, but then you just have to press that button again.
Then download Camtasia Studio (from Techsmith), select an area on your screen, so the image from the camera. The program "fakes" that the captured video is a webcam, so you can select it in MSN or other progs like NetMeeting and voila, you've got yourself a webcam :p
You just have to take care RemoteCapture is always on top of other programs, otherwise you will just capture your desktop. I know this isn't an easy way, but it works perfect. Except your battery is low after 40 minutes :D
I see you people are nagging that we just need to buy a webcam, but I almost never need a webcam, so I don't want to give 50€ (or $) just for a webcam when I have a digital camera.

While Camtasia is free to try fo a month, it's far from inexpensive to buy. What do you do when the trial expires?
