have spent the last 24 hours trying to sort this out.
the files sent to photoshop turn out nearly black.
looking at various sites the gamma should be corrected prior to this by the canon file image utility.
How do I do this?
all suggestions most appreciated.

Crispy,
AFAIK, there is still a bug in the linear TIFF creation ortuines in the Canon SDK that mean the files is effectively only 8-bit, despite be converted to 16-bit. This could mean that some images will not post-process very well and you will get posterisation.
Having said that the process in Photoshop is relatively simple:
1. Image>Adjustments>Levels and drag the white point slider to the right edge of the histogram.
2. Image>Adjustments>Curves and drag the curve up to boost overall brightness. You may find that it better to do this in several steps as the overall change is too great to give good results with a isngle adjustment.
