Just got my set of Photogenics and was wondering if I could use the 550ex to light up the background from behind the subject, or should i just get a smaller flash, like their 160 w/s... It only has full/half/quarter power though.

As long as you have a way of triggering the 550EX, there's no reason why you can't use it to light up the background.

I've used my 420EX with success. might need a home made snoot or something to control the beam though.

Hmmmm, I don't think triggering it will be a problem... Making a snoot might be alittle more dificult... :)

I'm not so sure triggering your 550EX will be all that easy. As I understand them they do not work well with optical slave units. How were you planning on doing this?

I have a hot-shoe adapter that attaches to a tripod and the 550, then it connects to the other hot-shoe adapter VIA PC on the camera...

Snoot? In a pinch, I've just rolled a couple of pages of newpaper and attached it to the front of my flash to serve as a make-shift snoot. And it worked perfectly.

Duh, simple triggering. I just don't consider the obvious sometimes.
