While waiting for my 1 meg card to arrive I was playing with my new toy and thew tiny 16 mb card that came with it. I took several dozen JPEGS and downloaded them... no problem. Then I wanted to get crazy and shoot some raw shots. After reading the manual and changing the settings, I took three macro shots outdoors, and then retreated to my office to work with them. The first one downloaded smooth as silk. The other two would not. All taken at the same time, with the same basic settings. I tried opening them in Adobe 5.5, 5.0, Corel, Irfanview, etc. no luck. I tried through zoombrowser to do it too, and although I could see the thumbnail, they would not open. They were labeled crw, and the first one was a JPEG.
Why were they different? How can I open them? I really like one of the shots and don't want to erase it. Any help out there?

CRW files are Canon raw image files. You need to install the Canon software (Zoombrowser) that came with the camera to decode the file into a .Tiff file or a .jpg file. The .crw files is the preferred image format if quality is an issue because there is no loss in image data unlike .jpg. Here is a link for process flow when using .crw files.

Actually, RAW files are a lot more than just uncompressed. It took me a while (~3000 pictures) to fully grasp the power behind shooting in RAW, and now I don't shot in anything but RAW. I find the real advantage is being able to adjust WB and other setting AFTER you have the pictures in your computer. You spend less time fiddling with options while out shooting.
Now, if I could just adjust focus, aperture and shutter speed after I got them home...

Thank you for your reply... I found my mistake. I did not format the 16 mb card before using it. Once I did, all was perfect. Thanks for the help!!!

you can view and do rudimentary editing of raw and jpeg files with irfanview, which is free.
i view my cards with this program and do simple editing like for ebay.
