View Full Version : G2 with Studio Strobes?

Greetings,
Can anyone tell me if they have had any luck using studio strobes with the G2? For example White Lightening monoblocks, Normans, Dyna Lights, Jack-Rabbits etc.
I know from years of happy 35mm Canon use that flash can be tricky when not using the canon flashes.
Thanks,
-Doug.

I use my Canon with a basic Kalt shoe-to-PC adapter frequently. Also with monolights - no problems except for one. ISO ratings do not relate properly, what you meter is generally too hot for a digital camera.
I always set the camera to ISO 50 but meter at 160 and ajust from there. It's real easy to blow out the highlights and run way past gamut, especially if you're going to offset in the end. You'll need to experiment a bit to get a feel for it.
My co-shooter, with his Coolpix 990, has the same problem with studio strobes. The rule is "test and manually compensate" at all times!
Once you get it worked out (and it ain't that hard), it's a piece of cake. We shoot for offset 50% of the time.

Harv,
Thanks for your response. To clarify, you attach a "thing" to the Hotshoe of your G2 that has a pc socket? This is used to attach the The pc cord from the strobe.
Do you have any problems with the camera adjusting your manual settings of the exposure controls?
Does the camera get "freaked out" by the flash light that it doesn't know is coming?
Do you ever encounter problems with the "pre-flash" firing your strobes early?
Thanks for your time and input.
-Doug.
