View Full Version : POTN G-Series challenge # 59 'public transport'

marie

Hi
and thank you

Congratulations to all, especially to the winners
and apologies for taking so long
I found it hard to cram the stuff in here properly
the results are on this url

http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=152147

************************************************** **********

Hi all

thank you and here's challenge # 59

* shots showing some of the action which surrounds what public transport is really all about in your area
a view in some way, which also shows something of those who are 'connecting' to the vehicle (s)

no shots of private transport used by the family, cars or bicycles etc.

it has to be of an outside 'group' , or even what a few people need..
their kind of transport as to what they are relying on, most days
*

I will be looking for nice sharp (enough) images, and good composition
a picture which portrays a lively 'feel' and atmosphere in some way .........
with not too much 'clutter' in the background
that can be difficult, but I know you all can rise to it

:)

thanks a lot
looking forward to seeing all of your shots
Good Luck

Wow congratulations all, a great set of shots this challenge!

BottomBracket I love your shot, it's technically perfect I think; from the composition captured to the exposure. It's great.

Great challenge this week (I'm sorry I was unable to enter :() and some really great shots. Congrats to the winners and all.

In addition to the winners I particularly enjoyed the shots by BottomBracket, (was this a "covert" shot?), alans220 (really fantastic, took my eye from first viewing, I love to softish feel to it and the captured movement) and richardbruce (the tangle of overhead wires is great - not too sure about the yellow advert though ;))

Congratulations, blacksmurf, andrewaaa5 and ma-s

Milan colors has the full gray scale on it, and it is more in the light gray shades side. That light shades, the reflections and the perspective lines are a very interesting combination. Nice shot, blacksmurf. I remember Milano as a really colorful city though.

Nice photo andrewaaa5! Were the yellow hat and the windows frames painted with the same spray can? :) Both elements of almost the same color melt the transport and the public.

Interesting point of view ma-s, lots of baby carriages posing for you inside the bigger transport, congratulations.

Thank you marie for the theme and the comments.

standing in the centre of the two stairways may have given a better angle and have had more impact , showing the people more dramatically

May be you are right, but while other people shot pictures with small point & shot cameras undisturbed, as soon as I aimed my Pro1 I got security guards asking me to keep it in the bag  .

About my picture, there was some discussion at home about the escalator as public transport.

A ‘light’ info from wikipedia:

Public transport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_transport)
3 Modern forms of public transport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_transport#Modern_forms_of_public_transport)
3.5 Sloped or vertical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_transport#Sloped_or_vertical)
Escalator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escalator)

As you see, some escalators are public transport… still discussing if an escalator inside a mall qualifies as public :) :)

Anyhow, there was this Door to Crowded Space (http://sites.google.com/site/rpolitsr/rpolitsr/varios/onthenet/IMG_3897_web.jpg) also ready for posting.

This post is kind of large now, but let me say some words about the pictures by others:

I enjoyed every submission, but mainly the beautiful work of Terrywoodenpic, the colorful transport of am_pitbull_terrier, and the wonderful picture of BottomBracket.

It would be nice to know how they were made.

BottomBracket was the girl really there? Seems borrowed from a fashion store.

Boutty, this time I was wondering about the colors in your photo.

Regards.

Although I mostly lurk, I love these challenges and they have taught me so much. Marie's choice of challenge really caught my attention because here in the Puget Sound area, so many people's lives revolve around the ferry schedule. We are grateful for the Washington State Ferries which make a commute to Seattle possible and enjoyable to boot!

Just for fun... I feel kind of shy about doing this, but this is the other photo taken with G2 that I almost posted. But the one I did post, showed more of the people which is what I thought Marie wanted. Hard to see when resized, but in the large version you can see the people and cars in the main cavity in front.

I was particularly loved Bottom Bracket's photo and thought it very well done!

I fully agree your shot of the escalator is public transport of a kind
it is transporting the public and that was never a doubt as regards the judging

I like your other shot 'door to crowded space' a lot
thanks .
very nice

I agree with you about what you say as regards security.
it is not a good feeling trying to take some shots like it
I partly guessed you were in that position and I thought you may be on your way to the escalator (on that side) and took the shot as you went towards it.

this is a beautiful photo Jessica
love the sky, the clouds and how the light is reflected in the water
what a beautiful ferry

this is the better of the two shots
you were right though , the other photo had the people and was more about what I was looking for

thank you very much

Tnx marie of the 3rd place and congratulation to blacksmurf and andrewaaa5!

Besides those two, BottomBracket's photo was also my favorite!

I had to choose my entry very quickly and as there were so many b/w entries this time and I didn't like the colors of my picture taken against light coming from those opposite windows, I turned it also to b/w. But the tone was not good (like Pio's was). I must study this part still alot, how to make it right... I also though about cropping those extra legs and hands, but because most of the young ones were really out of the picture, I left them there.

G2 in your hands and against your body is not so big (even though I have Lensmate on it), so that you can take photos with it much easier than with dslr. That's why most of the pictures I took on my vacation in NYC last month are of buildings etc and not of people on the streets, subway and parks, as much I would like to have captured those :( (that info to Pio ;) ).

And Andrew, I will not try to solve that avatar-Sudoku ;)

Congratulations to blacksmurf, andrewaaa5 & ma-s - Great photos guys. Thanks marie, for picking another interesting subject and all the hard work of judging & comments.

Well done everyone! I really think that everybody had submitted execeptionally good photos. I too, reckon BottomBracket's photo was a rippa and nice conversion as well.

Nice shot showing the transport there
however the ferry showing like that , not quite docked, it seems a little awkward for the people that are intending to get on board the passage way cannot be seen to be laid down, yet the people look as though they are all ready to walk aboard , or jumpI agreed with you! Timing is everything in photography I think. I should have waited for a little while.

Boutty, this time I was wondering about the colors in your photo.I was in a duotone mood the other night, playing with diffuse & sepia setting of this free plug-in (http://optikvervelabs.com/) for PS. The original photo is here (http://i.pbase.com/o4/49/607449/1/57866038.IMG_6733_filtered_col2_web.jpg). (For my friends in the Commonwealth, the stadium in the background was where the ceremonies (http://www.mcg.org.au/default.asp?pg=eventsdisplayarticle&articleid=1588)were held.)

And Andrew, I will not try to solve that avatar-Sudoku ;)
Shh...Markku, I have a cheatsheet in MSExcel to help you solving this... ;)

Let's see what blacksmurf has in mind for the next contest?!?

blacksmurf
28th of March 2006 (Tue), 06:49
I couldn't imagine that :)

Thank you, it is an honor...

Congratulations to andrewaaa5 & ma-s, thanks so much to Marie.
I liked very much the shots of Terrywoodenpic (great PP and composition, in my mind that ghost train is really moving), alans220 and bottombracket (your shot looks to me as a movie scene, I found contrast and depth really great).

My shot was taken in a Milan underground train, 10PM, choosing an almost empty wagon. Colors inside that wagons are really not vivid; so I decided to take this shot to exagerate the "grey" sensation of everyday passengers who came back home in that conditions: even if it's crowded, you can rarely hear people talking, and it's a typical aspect in Milan.
Rpolitsr, Milan has sure more colors in the center of town, but unfortunately it's always grey from many other points of view. I hope you've also seen other cities and colors in Italy :)

I will open the new challenge as soon as possibile, I think I already found the subject.

Andrew, I thought it was a better shot myself, but the one I actually posted for challenge sort of met Maries' criteria more as showing the people and cars (though difficult to see when resized small like that). The G2 was too primitive to have an ND filter built in, grin! No, that picture was taken "as is" with the G2. BTW Andrew my 3 older kids are all Sudoku fans!

Marie, also want to thank you for this challenge and for comments and judging. One thing I really appreciate is your positive input, always. Congrats to winners.

I still love my G2, though I am mostly using my Rebel XT these days.

Congratulations, blacksmurf, andrewaaa5 and ma-s,

another great set of photos

I would have chosen the same winner too

I had to go out Sunday afternoon to snatch a shot of the local tram service, took some colour and some infrared. Hoped that the infrared would give a nice motion blur of the people and keep the rest of the picture sharp, which it did, unfortunately I couldn't get close enough to avoid the railings and lamp-post.

well done to all

Marie, thanks for a well run challenge, and congratulations to the winners! Hours before the end of the challenge, I pm'd am_pitbull about his missing pic. I am glad everything turned out fine in that regard.

Lots of interesting entries in this challenge, and a couple of newbies too - welcome RichardBruce and jesshen!

Thank you all for those who expressed kind words towards my entry. It's just too bad that I didn't enter one that had the actual train in it. It was really a cold long wait for the train that day - some NYC train lines are notoriously sporadic during the weekend. To take this pic candidly, I had to pretend to take a pic of the tunnel wall and act really interested in it. After I put the camera up to my eye and 'take' a shot of the wall, I drop the camera to my waist and pretend to admire the shot I just took, but I was really aiming the lens at them and taking their shot. The swivel screen makes this ruse veru doable. The only thing that went wrong is that my jacket's sleeve kept getting inot the shot, it is that dark blob at the upper right corner.

The RAW file was then converted to B/W using Channel Mixer in PSCS, with a bit of dodging and burning in layers. Actually I was torn between entering this pic or another one from the same series - I'll see if I can post the other one later.

Time to sleep... goodnight all!

just found an online version but am too busy with work to try it properly:

i think using the excel 'cheatsheet' is, erm, cheating, and kind of defies the point of the puzzle... oh well...

I agree. Sudoku is a puzzle to be solved by your own brain, but certainly the mathematics involved in the Exel Solver must be an interesting matter!

I will check the link, thank you. Unfortunately, time to solve sudoku puzzles is borrowed from the time devoted to photography :(
