don't have either, but this review (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/canon-17-40.shtml) might be interesting for you.

I've had the 17-40 and now have the 16-35. In terms of focusing speed, I'd say that both are similar and are very fast. In fact, I'd say that they are not too different in terms of optical performance either.

True. I've owned both as well. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Get the 17-40L only if don't need the extra stop. Esp. if you plan on mainly shooting landscapes or any type of outdoor shots. f/4 is more than adequate for that purpose. It's a great lens for the money. IQ wise, I saw no significant difference, but I was able to use the 16-35L far more than I have used the 17-40L. I use my 16-35L for as many indoor shots as outside, so it was a no-brainer for me to move up one. However, I must admit that it was painful for me to part with my 17-40L and dish out what I consider too much money for an extra stop. One warning, the 16-35L is more prone to flare. That I can attest to. But I'm getting so much use out of this lens in many situations. Can't wait to use it on a FF body and really stretch its legs out. ;)
