I am a new Canon Digital SLR user... Bought an EF 28-135mm f/3.5-56 USM and a 50MM f/1.8 II with the camera.

I'd like to buy a lense for wide angle shots and am thinking of buy a good second hand one without stretching my budget.

The choices I have seen in Australia on ebay are :-

Canon EF 24MM F/2.8 or Tokina AF 19-35mm II f3.5-4.5

Which lense will give me sharper pictures? Any other advice will be great.

Thanks folks

The Canon will be a better lens.... I find primes at the wide end to be less of a flexibility "issue" as well.

Thanks

I will bid for the 24mm by Canon...

Is 24mm wide enough? Your other lens goes down to 28mm. I'm in the same position as you are with a 10D and the 28-135.

I was thinking that a 20mm lens would make a better focal length. You can always crop away a few edge pixels to make the 20mm look like the 24, but you can't add new pixels around the edges to make a 24 look like a 20.

The 24 really won't do it, and probably not the 19 either. To go really wide, get the Canon 15mm fisheye, and debarrelize with software. With the 10D, there will be lots of shots where you don't even have to do that. Lens is about $600 US new.

I would avoid the 19-35. I have one and it is not a very good lens at all. Focus is loose and clunky. Not very sharp at all

I'm really happy with my canon 17-40 f4. I paid 800 $US for it.

Without having to spend big money I would (and did) get the Sigma 15-30. It is a good sharp lens, goes really wide 15mm (24mm on the 10D) and is not too expensive ($430USD). If you care to see any shots with it, you can take a look at my gallery http://www.pbase.com/mkaplan/sigma_1530_samples

The Sigma 15-30 is a very nice lens, but I find the Tokina 17mm AT-X Pro much sharper. The Sigma goes all the way to 24mm on 1.6 crop body, so it's pretty wide. The Tokina is not that wide, "only" 28 mm and it lacks zoom flexibility - but boy, it is sharp ! It's also built like a tank - the build quality is actually on pair with The Canon L lenses.

You can see some examples made with the Tokina here (http://www.pbase.com/olegis/cats) and with the Sigma here (http://www.pbase.com/olegis/streets_ta&page=all) .

This is rather an old thread ;)
