Took me a while to finally decide on this set up, but I feel I made a heads up choice. This will be my first "L" glass. Also, I already have shorter and longer focal point lenses. Can't wait to see the image quality from the 24-70L 2.8 on the 30D! Just hoping it gets here soon!:D What do you guys/ladies think about my choices?

Firstly, welcome to POTN!
Secondly, can't fault your choice of body - mine arrived today ;) If you can afford the 24-70 'L' fair enough, but have you thought about the 3rd party alternatives? Pretty much the same quality for 1/3 the price!

Congratulations - will be looking forward to hear how you find that combinations. i was toying with the idea of getting the 24 - 70 myself, but was concerned it would be too long as a walk about on a 1.6 crop. i guess this really is a matter of personal choice.

Thanks Al, and I have heard time and time again that sigma, tamron, etc..., just doesn't compare to the lens quality and durability made by Canon.

Good choice! The image quality on a 30D with your chosen lens should be AOK - just like the 20D, it's a good pairing.
Now you need to plan wider and longer coverage - this is only the beginning! Enjoy your toys!

ds06- 38-112 won't be too long for your walk around. You may enjoy the extra reach. Oh and how do you like the 430EX? I just ordered the 480.

I wouldn't buy that!
Because I already have the 24-70, which lives on one body, and because I have the 20D with the 5D (or whatever equivalent's out when I'm ready) next. No - good choice.

Didn't know there is 480???
i do like the results i get with the flash. i bought it because it has pretty much all the manual features of the 580 but is a little bit more compact in size. the ETTL-II feature of being able to read the lens distance is nice, but not very usefull for me as i tend to use the flash indoors and therefore bounce it.

Great choice, your gonna love it. I want a 30D, might have to look to Canada, too impatient for the US to get them

You got some good stuff now feller. You should love the 24-70L, I have one.

I concede, based on what so many on this forum have said, that the 3rd party lenses in the 24ish-70ish range are good and even very good lenses. But, to say they are "pretty much the same quality" is a bit over the top. Is it worth the difference in cost for the Canon at 2 1/2 -3 times the price of third party? Depends on the individual I would think. But to say the 3rd party lenses are "pretty much the same quality" as Canon's 24-70L just ain't so.

Do you think the new 17-55 IS will compete optically with the 24-70L???

Don't know and don't care. I don't do EF-S lenses and really don't care for IS.
