I just recently purchased a Rebel XT and want to see if this works. C & C always welcome, but go easy on me. I am new to DSLR's and photoshop.

Welcome to the forum. You have a great subject and the pose works. However, in the first shot the background is not only distracting but because you have the camera tilted is disorienting. In the second shot, you have a too contrasty of a background (too much of a background showing) and with the animal's dark coloration losing some details in the shadows. You could use flash fill or a reflector, crop the image leaving more room in the direction of where the head is facing should improve the image. IMHO

welcome to the forum! great pics. the only thing that I see is that the first on is a bit disorented b/c you are shooting up towards the face. maybe try slightly down or even with the camera a dogs face. the second one is hightly contrasty, and the feet are not all of the way in it. what if you turned it to b&w? just something to think about! great job.
