I have a 20d and have shot the 3 consecutive shots on a tripod (expose for lights, darks and mids), but is there a tutorial somewhere that shows how to put all three together using each photo for its particular exposure. Thanks.

Here is another: http://www.thelightsright.com/tutorials-video.htm
You would have to go through the process twice. I usually blend the lighter images first, and then the darker. The other option is merge to HDR in PS, or my preference: Photomatix (http://www.hdrsoft.com/).

Would it be advisable to sharpen each individual highlight layer first or sharpen the whole compilation at the end? Thanks.

No - don't do anything until they're merged. This will become obvious once you think aboout how sharpening works. See this pdf (http://www.thelightsright.com/tutorials/PutAFineEdgeOnYourSharpeningSkills.pdf). Sharpening will affct the edges, which you want in perfect registration, down to the pixel, for a merge to look good. Once the merge is complete, do your usual PP (noise reduction, sharpening, color correction, contrast, etc.).
