View Full Version : a60 vs. a70 - question about noise

I've just had an A60 replaced with a new A60 (bought it under a month ago, there were two bright hot pixels visible on every photo) . So now I have a new A60 in the box, and now I'm wondering whether I should have switched it with an A70 instead.

Printing is not a big concern though once in a while I wouldn't mind a few 8*10's for myself. The photos I tend to take are macros, and night shots.

I'm very happy with the A60, and in the few weeks I had it I've taken some photos I've been ok with (I'll probably display some here for critique). I'm just a little picky about noise that you could see in areas, especially in dusk scenes. I could live with it, but I'm just checking out all my options. I don't know if getting a higher MP camera will improve that.

Also, I heard from some customer reviews that A70 seems to produce more noise in lower light than the A60 does and I don't understand why it would. I'll happily keep this camera, but I still have the option to trade it in for the A70 (I'll eat the extra hundred even).

One of the reasons I didn't get the A70 is budget (but budget is always readjusted with every pay day, right ;) .. ) . Eventually I'd like to move up to a G3
anyway, I'm new to these forums. Hi!

The A60 has the same size CCD as the A70, but has less pixels. This likely relates to larger pixels, which would relate to better receptiveness to light, thus less noise.

So you have a trade off, lower resolution, but less noise...

Perhaps the camera shop would allow you to take a few comparison shots with the a70 (on your card) and you could compare the shots to what your a60 makes (even compare the increase in resolution.) Then you could evaluate the two cameras better.

Thanks for your reply.

I exchanged it for the A70 after all. I liked the A60 very much but I figure that the A70 will be more useful in the future as I improve my photography skills (hopefully).
