Now that most of you have a digital SLR camera, and ofcourse few Canon lenses, if you were to buy a film SLR to add to your equipment, what would you buy, without breaking the bank?

The best compliment that I was looking at was the Elan 7. Very similar in feel and features.

I decided to chuck film forever, however, and didn't buy it.

I would get and EOS 3 and an elan 7 or a nikon F100 or a Nikon N80 all great camears. I wish I had not sold off my EOS A2 I really loved that cameara the best A/F in low light. This is my choice.

Go for the EOS Elan 7 (EOS 33 outside USA), or Elan 7E (EOS 30 outside USA) if you want eye controlled focus. This is the more similar film camera compared to the 10D. It uses the same 7 point autofocus.
A used EOS A2 or A2E (or EOS 5 outside USA) will be also a very good and cheaper option (the A2E/5 has also eye controlled focus). Only 5 point autofocus. Is a somewhat old but excellent camera. The AF is first rate even in total darkness thanks to its infrarred AF asist light.

I had the EOS 30 before the 10D. Actually, I traded in the EOS 30 to get the 10D.

If there was one feature from the EOS 30 that I liked and would like on the 10D, that would be eye focus. That was pretty cool for a lazy ass like myself!

However, I will NEVER go back to film - ever ...

I have an EOS 33 (elan 7) to compliment my 10D on the film side. However now that I have the 10D (which is great) I ALWAYS have the EOS 33 loaded with velvia for those stunning landscape shots.
No matter what anyone says digital cannot match the quality of velvia 50 :)

it may sound a bit obsolete, but i have a canon f1, canon a1 and olympus om1 as a film counterpart. the little olympus mju is always in my car or in my pocket.

Was eye focus a useful tool?

Ofcourse with Canon lenses, another set of investment on a different lens series would be expensive.
I wonder what is the street price for a EOS 3?

Eye focus was useful as long as there was not too much movement in what you were attempting to focus on. It was too slow for sports photography, I mean. I will admit that it took several rolls of film for me to figure that out ...

One feature of the eye focus that I liked was being able to focus on one part of a subject, lock on to that distance and then alter what was in the frame. If that makes any sense.

And then there were times when the eye focus refused to obey my eyeball - more likely a problem with the photographer failing to fully understand the camera's potential!

Regardless, an interesting innovation.

Eye focusing has becomed a second nature to me with my EOS 5. I never shoot sports, and my eyes has no sight problems (this is important regarding eye control) and my camera was very carefully callibrated to my eye, so I don't ever think where the focus must be done. I just look the subject and fire.
The S50 has forced me to focus at center point again, and then recompose. A little annoying at first. I miss eye controlled AF? Sure. I hope Canon includes some eye-controlled DSLR soon, at least as an option, as the EOS 30/33 case.

Personally I would say the Elan 7, Elan II or one of the latest rebels on the market. It really depends on how much shooting you plan on doing and what level of photography you're at. Also if you purchase a body that uses EOS lens then when you decide to upgrade most of your lens will match the new digital bodies. Canon FD mounts are grear for beginners who wants to learn basic skills on photography. Most pawnshops has lens and bodies for about $250.00. But try to stay away from fd mount cameras unless you know you will never need auto focus or have plans on upgrading, there trade in value is very little. I still have a Canon Ftb model and I only get to use it on shoots that I have time to perfect each shot.

You are the first person I've ever heard who actually enjoys rolling film... I'd do the hands in a bag demonstration for my instructor to get the grade but would take all of my assignements and jobs to Ritz. I was burned twice by emulsion sticking. Now the darkroom and the old Bessler... that was different.

Alas, I never intend to smell the pungent aromas of developer, stop bath and fixer again. I've traded my trays for a mouse and my enlarger for a computer running Photoshop. And from my lips to God's ears, I don't miss the old way one bit!

lol I knew I was wierd =P ah well hehe...I cant wait till the 18th I start school again and I'll be back into photography class...I miss it sooo much....hehe hopefully I can find my favorite reels LOL I would hide the 2 reels that I was able to use the best...cause I was sick and tired of getting stuck with the bent up reels that I could never get the film to go on right. Hopefully my teacher is getting some infrared film for me to experiment around with =P if not I am still thinking about getting a infrared filter for my digital ^_^
