Nice shot!
BTW: I'm looking forward to seeing some pictures from the new TS-Es! I wonder whether they got rid of the barrel distorsion... and some other issues of the previous version. :)

sheawyatt is killin' it with this lens. Exactly the type of shot I'd look to get out of it. Great stuff, dude!
Is it bad that I haven't wanted to take my 17-40L out of the bag ever since I bought this lens? I'm normally aching for more FOV on the 1.3X 1DII, but I've forced myself to only use the 24mm TS for anything landscape related for the last month, and I'm starting to become uncomfortably comfortable with such a 'tight' FOV.
Last week:

A note for potential buyers: I picked up the Angle Finder C to try and help focus when tilting, and it is a big improvement.

Just got mine yesterday. Been wanting one a long time, but really only made sense when I went full frame. I haven't had a chance to shoot with it much, but I'm very excited. Tilt is pretty darn cool....still learning all the ins and outs of that. I'll use the shift most often, since I shoot a ton of architecture (which is why I wanted it.)
I'll post some shots when I have a chance to go downtown with it...maybe Friday. :) Very excited!

So here are from today...my first real outing with the lens. Very impressed with tilt (though sometimes hard to get just right). Shift is great until you start reaching the limits...then I'm finding it quite soft, even at f/8 (near maximum shift). Still...very cool lens.
This was at maximum tilt:

Here's one at around 8mm shift (I think)

And, here's a third, with positive shift of around 6mm:

A couple shots from this evening. Both shifted up ~4mm @ f/11, no tilt.
This lens performs better on my new 1DsII than my 1DII when unshifted (amazingly sharp, I'll post some 100% crops soon), but the corners suffer more when shifted than on my 1DII. I'll have to do some rigorous tests to see where the quality becomes unusable. These two were at ~4mm and are still plenty good, but the decreased corner sharpness is definitely noticeable at 100% (not so much in 8.5x11 prints that I quickly made though).

Wow... these TS-E lenses seem to come into their own from an elevated view. These shots make the scenes look as though they are models. You don't seem to get the same visual illusion on any of landscape shots.

It depends. I have the B+W XS-Pro UV filter on mine and for most shooting it doesn't vignette. However, in some tilt-shift settings, the lens without a filter will vignette, so obviously adding the filter makes it marginally worse. You could always take it off if it bothers you in those situations.

Would anyone be willing to elaborate on why Canon chose to upgrade this particular model? Is the new version that much sharper? Does it have that much better coatings?
I'd like to hear from the crowd who owns this original version.

Yes and yes :)
I have the new version and tried the original. The mkII is incredibly sharp, controls CA a lot better and the coatings handle flare very well. It's also better build.
Another big improvement of the new version is that you can now rotate tilt and shift independently. The original can't do this.
I'm impressed by it.

I'm not shooting landscape pano's, that is where having the tilt and shift oriented 90 degrees to each other comes into play, sharp low foreground while shifting from one side to the other. Shooting a tall object using vertical shift where you want the lower foreground in focus is where having the tilt and shift oriented the same works.

As with us all, my days are numbered. Fortunately I haven't a clue what that number is--I'm at a stage, however, where I can play with pretty toys and never do anything resembling work or learning--unless my wife says to do it!

this page shows the best depiction of the hinge line. The picture should be animated. the 24mm hinge line at 8 degrees down tilt should be about 9 inches below the axis of the lens. Let me know and I can post a URL for the tables.

I was going to get more humorous here and make fun of your seriousness, but I will let the urge pass. Great bit of information, but I read about it some time ago--at least 30 years back. I'm not working for a living, I'm not doing technical photography. I'm certainly not going to be measuring and calculating the Hinge Rule and the Scheimpflug Rule.
I'll be perfectly happy to just muddle along, looking through the viewfinder and swinging or tilting in a shifty manner until I see something I like and --snap-- it's done. I care no more for the why and wherefores of the technique than I do how the layers of silicone create light sensors. Sorry about that.
On the other hand, what you have referred to is useful information, especially for anyone interested in large format photography and who must produce a precise commercial image in the studio.

The tables are pretty easy to deal with, I should know 'cause I need things to be easy. They allow one to ball park the sharp focus plane, then adjust focus to move it. If I can cut down on how much dweebing I'm doing the better.

I tried resurrecting an older thread, but unfortunately didn't get a reply there.
I have gotten an offer to purchase a 24mm TS-E Mark I lens for roughly 550 euros. The new price of the lens here is around 1100, so it's a really tempting offer. I've really been wanting to get into TS-E lenses, but don't know if this lens is what I need. I will use the lens for landscapes, cityscapes and architecture, but am quite a pixel peeper.
Do you think this is good value for money, and is this lens as "bad" as it is sometimes reviewed?
EDIT: I don't have the funds to purchase the Mark II version unfortunately.

I would certainly buy mine again at that price. How are they reviewed badly out of curiousity? Is that just in comparison to the mark II version?

I hate comparing charts, but have done it for this lens. The 24mm TS-E Mk 1 seems to have quite some CA, and seems to be less sharp than the Mk2, but also than the 45mm and 90mm TS-E's. Comparing it to zooms, even there the corner sharpness seems to be less.
On the other hand, the samples that I've seen here are great. I don't see that much CA and overall the lens seems to be sharp.
The sale ends tonight, so I am somewhat under pressure. As I would feel the need to change my lens line-up if I purchase the TS-E, it's a very difficult decision. The price just seems great, and apparently the lens has hardly been used.

ita all depends on how you use it, sure the others are sharper, but thats not what makes or breaks a photo. Its great fun to use, and if you dont want it im sure you can sell it for 700 the day after!

I agree, this is not the sharpest lens I own nor does it handle CA as well as others. What it does do however, no other lens in my kit bag can do (mainly talking about converging verticals while shifting here). It's also a lot of fun to use the crazy selective focus using the tilt feature.
I may not keep it if I were forced to only have 1 lens, but it would certainly be in the last few to go :)

These lenses are real cool. I've got the 90mm and the 24mmII.
The procedure you are mentioned will rotate the tilt portion of the lens 90 degrees so that it is on the same axis as the shift.

The whole 10 photo series is found here: http://herranen.kuvat.fi/kuvat/Tehdas/
All photos are available in HIGH res, so you can create your opinion concerning the IQ of this lens. The ultra-high res photos are stitched by shifting the lens.

For a 5D, 24mm is perfect. For a crop body, you would find yourself wanting something wider IMHO.

I've just been looking into that myself when researching tilt shift. It seems that it's basically just as a result of having such a limited area of focus in a large landscape or cityscape shot. It imitates what we'd see with a shot of a train model or something that's actually miniature. Normally just from how the lenses work, we'd be on infinity focus for a landscape shot and couldn't help but get everything mostly in focus. It also helps when you have an angle from up above and with some super pumped up contrast and saturation.
It really only makes everything look mini when you try to selectively focus, you can also use the tilt shift to get everything in focus and it doesn't have the same look as all.
Just ordered this lens and haven't played with it yet though, so this is based on reading, not on 1st hand experience.

I'm not 100% sure of this but I encourage any knowing individual to either confirm or correct this.
When you get up close to something (i.e. something miniature) depth of field decreases, and whether we know it or not we've been trained to see this in pictures of smaller things. When a TS lens is tilted the plane of focus (is that the right term?) remains parallel to the lens elements and is no longer on the same plane as the sensor (or film). The area in focus is the line at which the plane of focus and the sensor intercept.

Well, after much debate and soul searching I finally got round to buying a used 24mm Mk1
There is much to learn but so far the results are encouraging

I am reasonably happy with it for a first attempt, at least it is fairly straight but I have a long way to go,but live view is a boon
That's a really great pic.:)
Building not falling down!! You;re a quick study

Got this lens some time ago, it's my third copy and finnaly i understood what this lens is for and how to use it to get best results.
I'm very pleased with the lens - i knew it's not the best performer, but when it's stopped down it's really, really good and the bokeh that lens produces when it's tilted is kind of pleasing and nice.
Few shots from my last "trip" to Cracow, Poland made between photoshoot and dinner :-)
Few panoramas:

Not much love for this lens here?
Just bought it used, to those on a budget, it's a godsend.
