Rebel XT EOS 350D & 420EZ

Been using my new Rebel for two months and I am more than completely satisfied with the body. Here is my question:

Until I purchase a new 430EX I want to use my 420EZ. I understand that I need to set the strobe to Manual. What shoot mode settings should I use on the camera? For example can I shoot in 'P' and set my shutter speed.

Also I use a Quantam Bantam battery pack. On my second set of cells and the unit is over 7 years old and still flashing.

Shoot manual everywhere IMHO. Be careful with the trigger voltage - it might fry your camera. Someone else should be able to tell you if it's ok. If in doubt get a wein safe sync.
