I don't know about other Canon cameras other than 10D, D30 and 60. If i were in the market for a 5-600 dollar camera I'd check out Canon's line first after the success I've had with their lenses.
But I can strongly reccomend a Minolta DiMage 7i as a great all-around prosumer camera. It's completely LOADED with features and it's a steal if you can find one used.

I agree with Dave.
Minolta Dimage 7i is the best for your budget.
That was my previous camera, and I made good quality pictures with it. It has fully manual control and wide range of features.

Even a 10D wouldn't be a good buy at $500..... I can't get mine to take an "in focus" shot and Canon can't fix it, they have tried though.....
I don't recommend the 10D to anyone any more !

Another good choice is either the Canon powershot G2 or G3 prices has dropped pretty much in the last 4 months but you lose alittle on the zoom. Do'nt forget keep cash on hand for the Card/ Memory reader $30.00 average and more Memory most cams coms with 32 - 64meg cards.

hmmm I really like the Canon EOS 10D...the only other camera I really like that is a digital is the Sony Mavica CD500..it is a 5 megapixal cam that puts the pics directly onto a mini cds...that is what my mom has...the CD500 costs between $500-699
the only problem I have ever had with my Canon EOS 10D is my flash mysteriously quit popping up when I press the button....I dont understand why people are having problems focusing with the 10D I have never had that kind of problem before.....except with a macro lens but that is only expected to happen either that or with an extender on...

Thanks to everybody for the incredible help, now you all have to help me decide which I am going 4!
I have decided to chose between these cameras because it is for family purposes ( I am not a pro and I don't know **** about manual setting of a camera! ), and not photography purposes, and considering that I will need a big CF card, about 256MB ($50) , and a printer so this is what I consedered in order of likeness:
Powershot S50 ($460 new)
Powershot G3 ($460 new)
HP Photosmart 935 ($380 new) price mostly
Olympus c-750UZ ($473 new) 10x optical zoom
OLYMPUS C-5050 ($499 new)
