Here's Hugo with a CD for size comparison.
So, is he big by dragonfly standards?

Tsk tsk tsk... fingerprints on the cd. :D Edit: I just realized that's the reflection of his wings. :o
Great shot! Still hard to judge how big he is though. Think he's longer/bigger than a wooden clothes pin?

Probably the same size as one of those REALLY old ones that are a pin, longer than the newer clip ones.
In one of the photos I am holding him, but it would still be difficult to judge his size because I have fairly large hands.

Is it about 4" long? That's huge if it is. Oh......was it still alive?

I would say he is about 3.25 inches long (~8cm).

Um - no. That's where I draw the line. No critters on my face. :p
Yes, Hugo was alive during the photo shoot. But sadly he died during the night. I tried to put him outside, but all he wanted was to be near a light so he kept banging into the door. In the end I let him go back into the bathroom on his favorite towel and left the light on overnight for him.

I think they live up 2 months in adult stage, so it would have come to an end naturally very soon anyway, at least it had some love and affection in its last few hours RIP :D ...

We have some here of about that size too in the Okanagan Valley. But unfortunately I couldn't get a good shot of them yet - maybe this year. They call them Darner (about 80mm).
So your Hugo was pretty one of the biggest dragonflies.

interesting shot with the different textures and the contrast between an ancient design and a modern one. Maybe a couple of juicy flies would have kept it going a bit longer?

Nice shot! Over here, the biggest I ever saw is about 15cm. I can even hear the wings flap from far. :D:D:D

Melvyn, now you're just showing off ;) . Are you saying that none of your pics were actually macro shots? ;)
Athena, Hugo was huge. Too bad he didn't make it :( Nice of you to take him in.
