A major hunting magazine has offered to purchase a photo from me. I have no idea how to handle this. The photo is very unique and I feel it will wanted by more than one publications. Any advise on how to handle this would be greatly appreciated.

depends on how large the publication is, and if you are selling it for one publication or selling them exclusive rights to the shot.

That's my problem, I have no knowledge on how to sell a photo. I don't want to sell them exclusive rights, then have them turn around and sell it a hundred times over. The magazine has a huge subscription base.

well make them a deal based on non-exclusive rights based on their total circulation... there is a calculator out there that will give you an idea... someone will let you know where it is, i can't remember at this exact moment.
