I am thinking (very seriously) of buying a 10D for photographing our local HS football games both for myself (my son plays) and for the local newspaper. Way back in the day I did the same thing for the school yearbook and had great results with a Nikon F, a fairly fast zoom lens and 400 ASA B&W film, no flash. My cousin has a 10D and is basicly doing back flips over the thing and suggested I look into going digital. My questions for anyone who is in the same circumstance and using a digital SLR are: What lenses? Use of a flash? Grandstand versus sideline photography (I would think I could get some good 'from above' shots from the grandstand with a good telephoto, though I got great shots from the sidelines 25 years ago)? Would the 10D (or D30-D60) be good platforms for this? Their first game is in two weeks so any suggestions or comments (or websites) would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

I would say the 10D is a great platform for this, and if you can stretch to a lens such as the 70-200 F2.8 IS you will be sorted for your shots both sideline and grandstand.
The main benefit of the DSLR in your situation is the ability to change ISO during shooting. You can easily go up to ISO 800 and recover the noise in photoshop. 1600 if it is going to a newspaper because of poor print quality.
Go on, you know you want to....
