...and won the grand prize! :D

I just joined a local digital imaging club that meets on the last Thurs. of every month. Every month they have a photo contest and this month's theme was Photojournalism. So I entered some shots that I originally posted here...

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=143685

The "Girl in the Orange Jacket" shot got Second Prize and the "Emotional Woman Crying" shot won the Grand Prize. I also entered the "Wedding-Ring-Hug-Flag-Backdrop" shot and another one that I never posted here. Anyway, I'm stoked. There were a lot of great photos that were submitted and I felt a little intimidated at first. On a side note, the majority of the members are Nikon shooters. I hope I made you guys proud. ;)

The pride is yours - the delight is ours.

I only found your original thread tonight (my time) and was stunned by the portrayal of raw emotion. You did a great job - as the imaging club accolade attests.

Well done.

Hey a great result. Well done and congrats. I got a first at my club too last week. And I'll see you with my third and my merit too. And for a raise -I won a raffle prize.
First time I won anything.

Congratulations! You deserve it. You're well on your way to your dream.

On a different note- I understand that the military used to send soldiers who's job it was to take photographs in war zones. For example, you will find a lot of 'live' shots of trench warefare from the Second World War. Do they still do this or have they left the documentation up to the photojournalists who now enter the warzone as well?

We've had both military photographers (combat camera) and civilian photojournalists tag along with my platoon during the war on several occaisions. Mike Ware and Time magazine photographer Franco Pagetti documented our platoon during Operation Restoring Rights in Tal'Afar, Iraq last year for example. Those photos appeared in an October issue of Time magazine. We carried around some CNN reporters with us, but they got footage of our sister platoons doing there thing. Combat camera accompanied my platoon as they walked through a couple of areas where most of our most fierce firefights took place. A lot of footage of my guys have been shown in the PBS documentary The Insurgency and more recently on 60 minutes. I think there is a push to have the History channel to a documentary on us as well. My platoon suffered a 30% casualty rate the last time we were there. So, yeah.

Thanks for the information.

As for the casualty rates of your platoon, as well as our Canadian soldiers and all allied forces, I commend your bravery and thank you and wish you continued safety and hope this conflict can come to an end sooner than later.

I recently got in touch with a friend who joined the army as a photojournalist. He now teaches at Fort Meade.

Congrats on the award! Your pictures are awesome and really capture the moment and emotions.

I didn't see the original post but I've just looked through and I have to say they brought tears to me eyes. I know what it is like being away from my kids for just a short while so these service-people must go through hell. The one of the boy with his dad really had me choking the emotion back - he looks just like my boy.

Man these deserve to win awards and I'm pleased for you that you have. But much more importantly they have really made people have an emotional response which is much more of a feather in your cap.

Really? I'm being reassigned to that area to teach ROTC at BSU this summer, a hop, skip and a jump from Ft. Meade. I'd like to meet him. ;)

If I quit spending so much time on these damn forums I can probably get some work done! ;) Hopefully I'll have something up soon.

Awesome! Congratulations. I'm so very happy for you...

And the girl in orange jacket, as I told you before, it IS a picture of the year waiting to happen. I have no doubt that we will see your stuff on the cover of Time or Newsweek sometime in the future.
