I'm hoping I could make prints of these as a gift. Please be honest! I'm not sure about the orange butterfly at the bottom. I had another beautiful one I was going to use but even though I loved the composition, it was out of focus. :( Then of course, there was another orange one that came out crystal clear ... but I had cut off the tip of a wing with the frame. Heh.

(these were taken with a Powershot A60, and have been altered in photoshop to remove some of the noise in darker spaces)

On first inspection I liked what you have put together but found the surrounding frame a bit dark. It is very hard to see the pattern you have applied. I do like it. I would eliminate the black around that pattern. One frame is enough. I like the orange butterfly in the shot and wouldn't place it anywhere else. I first thought that maybe in the center but it throws the balance off. It still overpowers the other two but I think the idea is to look from butterfly to butterfly anyway. It has that effect so well done in that regard. Maybe one small thing I would do with the blue butterfly is to enlarge it a touch so it is the same size as the orange one. That would also create more balance.
The orange butterfly you say came out clear but cut the wing tip off may still be usable but I've yet to see it to suggest what kind of magic can be performed. :D

Hi thanks! I think I agree with you that the blue butterfly could be a bigger. I'll give that a try. I thought about putting the orange one in the middle too, but as I didn't feel I had a "great" orange butterfly picture I didn't want to put too much emphasis on it. As for the other orange butterflies, here are the "alternates"...
butterfly 1 (http://pixie.blackdaisies.com/layer2/butterfly0058sm.jpg)
This was the one that came out fuzzy. No amount of photoshop sharpening could make me happy and I didn't want to go too far with it.
butterfly 2 (http://pixie.blackdaisies.com/layer2/butterfly0245sm.jpg)
This came out clear but the wing was cut off. I'm not so good with photoshop yet as to fake it. :p
Thank you for your input.

Is there a reason why you didn't place the frames symmetrical? Both left/right and top/bottom are not symmetrical...
Cheers, Lex

You can definitely fix that in Photoshop. I'm no Photoshop expert, but I increased the canvas size, then used the clone tool, the patch tool, and copying/pasting/rotating/masking to copy the tip of one wing to the other. Then I cropped it back to 800x600. You could extend the top and right side even further using similar tools. Let me know if you want me to pull this from my site, otherwise I'll leave it up awhile. I only posted this version and credited "jinzou" aside from the wing tip fix. Its in my "Miscellaneous" collection.

Hi Sheri! That's great. I tried to do something similar but it came out a big mess. I'll try again and see if I like that butterfly better. But thank you very much!
As for the frames being assymetrical .. I eyeballed it in photoshop. And I'm not very good with symmetry. ;)

I looked at this again and noticed my rotated copy of the wing tip didn't look right. So looking in Photoshop, I found a "transform" that was more appropriate -- "Flip Horizontal".
I think I didn't compress this one as much, its about 200K so here's a link instead of embedding. This version also extends the right side and the top a bit.

Why not reverse the order of the blue with yellow butterflys. This will order both the openess of the wings, and the brightness of the surrounding leaves.
I like the dark pattern as it is there to see, but does not compete at all with the subjects.
Nice shots. The original selection works nice.
