Does anyone use the cokin filter system on their 10D's? Would the 17-40L and the "X" or is it "PRO" system work together or will you get the filter holder in the picture at 17/27.2mm ??

IIRC, it should be the "P" system. I use "HiTech" ND grad filters and Cokin's own Startlight and CPL filters and they work. BTW, I use D30 and it should work with any lens so long the lens has corresponding adaptor ring.

Hope it helps.

However, read what John Shaw says about the Cokin filter holder and how he modified his to avoid a problem.

He cut and filed off the outer "notch" so that last eighth inch of holder can't be seen. This reduces the number of filters that you can slide into the holder, but... how many of us use more than one filter at a time anyway?

I did this for my Cokin P Series when I used it with my Canon A2e -- had lots of vignetting with my 20mm lens. I doubt this would be necessary with the 10D considering the 1.6x multiplication factor. Even a 17mm lens is effectively a 27mm -- and that shouldn't cause vignetting.

I use the cokin P system on my 10D, it works fine with sigma 17-35mm, although I need to remove the filter 'hood' when doing so.

I am new to ND filter and going to buy the HiTech ND filters, what grad (0.3-1.2?) do you recommend?

I use the P Series system on my Sigma 17-35 with no problems using the standard Cokin 3 slot holder on my 10D.

It does vignette on my film Canon but not on the 10D at 17mm, but of course that is the crop factor.

Cheers
