View Full Version : WTB: 24-70L....again.

So...I had a thread up a little while back wanting to buy one of these gems. I got plenty of offers from buyers, but I hadn't had the money yet, and most of them sold. However, there was one thing that kinda bothered me...
Other than a few explanations (I'm switching to primes/ I got the 24-105 instead, etc.) I find myself wondering....why do these people want to get rid of such a lens? None of them (other than those few) stated a reason, and yet said they were "tack sharp", etc. I also realize that some people just can't justify the huge cost of this lens for its range. I guess it just makes me a bit nervous, even with fellow members. Mostly junior members that I don't know. Also, I think about how some of these people want $1050 or so for their lens, when for $40-50 more, I get a brand new one. A couple of these had tatty hoods and such, too.
So here's my double question...
Does anyone have one at a decent price for a used lens, or else does anyone know of the "best price" on this lens? Lowest I seem to find is $1099 with psmar. I appreciate any help/offers with this.
By the way, I'm told I'll have my money back by Monday at the latest, maybe today, so if I buy one from one of you, that's when I'd be able to pay. Thanks again, guys.

Good luck on finding a one used. I got mine from B&H using the psjan and felt good about it because I could return it if I had to.

That's another thing I was worried about...not to impune anyone's honor, but if someone should send me a bad-ish copy, there's nothing I could do about it, and I wouldn't feel right reselling it. I would only be able to buy from someone I trusted.
So there's another thing- If I don't know you fairly well, I'm afraid I wouldn't feel comfortable buying from you.

Looks like new is the way for you to go. You sorta confirmed it in your initial post. You have to keep in mind that most people selling theirs did NOT get to make use of the psjan/psmar code, so they're already sacrificing a bit by selling it close to a grand.

Shame - I somewhat understand your concern. I'm thinking about selling my LNIB 24-70L. Note: I'm only thinking at this point. My reasons for selling are that I have a 24 - 105L which is just hogging all the time on my 20D. The 24 - 70 is just jealous. I have just sold my 20D and 10-22 to help lessen the pain of a new 5D next week once the rumored rebate hits. Depending on how my experience goes with the 5D, the 24-70 may have to go. Too much money to be sitting in it's case. Tack sharp is correct, but only if it is on the camera. Right now the 24-105 is just so much lighter and sharp, but I want to see what FF does to it.
I agree buying is a risky business, however selling is just as scary. Paypal's nice and all, but I've heard of many ebay sellers shipping items only to find out that the money was no good. This is one of the reasons I have given up on ebay and decided try out this forum's members. My experience has been excellent all be it just one sale.
Good luck with your search, I hope you find what you are looking for at a good price. However, your list of potential sellers is becoming pretty small. Many of us "junior members" are simply individuals trying to learn as much as possible and not yet confident enough or quick enough to post.
Based on what you have been saying it might be easier just to get one from B&H and not add any extra stress.
Not trying to tell you want to do, just trying to be a sounding board. All the best.

Looks like I've got one. Actually went with a used one.

...well, I understand completely, but even so, that doesn't put me any more at ease. I understand what you said about sellers with paypal, too...that's happened a whopping 3 times to me. Totalled over $500, too. However, I've done tens of thousands of dollars worth of business through paypal, and I'm not too worried. Thanks for your comment.
As of right now, I've got my eye on one, assuming I get my refund by Monday. If something happens, I'll post again that I'm still looking. Otherwise, let's put this thread to rest. No need to take up bandwidth. If you want to say anything or discuss something, feel free to PM me. Thanks again to everyone.

Ronald, you have become like a son to me I have never had;) . So I am givin you what I think is a good advice: buy the "brick" only from a store/person where you can return it guaranteed for a full refund or another copy. Even if you have to pay extra.....it is worth the money......as you know, a good copy of the "brick" is excellent, a poor copy is no better than any consumer zoom.
