Hi All,

I am trying to put together a decent software package to help with my digital photography. It's proving to be quite difficult. I have a Macintosh and have used iPhoto for awhile but want to do more improvements with my photos. I was about to buy Photoshop Elements 4.0 (cant afford CS), when I found and downloaded The GIMP. It seems like an awesome program and I have figured out how to do a few things on it. However, absolutely nothing happens when I try printing with it. I hit print, it processes the print job, and then nothing happens. I can print from any other app except the GIMP. My printer is a Canon PIXMA 6000D. I can't find any source of information about how to try to solve this problem. No luck at GIMP forums, Apple formums, etc. Does anyone here use GIMP with Canon printers? How did you get it to print?

Thanks much for your help.

I am also a 'The GIMP' user. I've never actually thought about printing from it, but I just gave it a try and it worked fine from a Windows PC to a LaserJet. After processing the print job, do you see it in your printer's queue?

No, I see no signs whatsoever that my print job has left the GIMP and headed out into the computer's OS. None at all. I really think I have a driver issue but don't know how to go about it. What printer do you use and how did you get a driver for it?

and also, why did you never think to print from the GIMP? Interesting, (I am a novice).

I no longer print my photos at home. But when/if I do, I do not print directly from within a photo editor. Instead, I take the converted JPG and use PhotoPrint (I think that's the name of it) which came on the Canon CD with the camera. I select my JPGs from within this application. A print application makes things much easier to decide what size to print and how to print. I would like to get QImage one of these days.

I am not sure if PhotoPrint exists for the Mac, but there must be some other type of print software which will let you select converted JPGs.

I didn't think of printing from the GIMP, I guess, because I always print using my converted JPG. I never even knew the Print option existed. I tested this out with a LaserJet, but I have a Canon printer at home I can try it on.

Seems like a CUPS issue working with X11...

What does this mean? How do I fix it?

Try looking at Gimp-Print. As a Windows user, I haven't needed to use this package, but I think you need it for Unix-based systems.

Check out: http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3 which contains a package specific to Max OS X.

GIMP is actually an application that relies on the X11 window manager, it's not native Aqua. However, it prints via CUPS (the printing system OS X uses) so it should be seamless.

I'll have to take a look at the way it's set up and see where/why it might fail. I've never printed from the GIMP, so offhand I"m not sure.

As a quick workaround in the meantime, you could save your file and print it with Preview.app, say.
